The role supports apheresis services primarily at South Lake Union, with mobile procedures at University of Washington (adults), performing cell collections and therapeutic apheresis for patients, donors, and research participants. Care is delivered in a 1:1 model within a highly experienced, well-supported team focused on quality, safety, and professional growth.This position is per diem.ResponsibilitiesAssesses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs and evaluates patients' adaptation to health changesDevelops a plan of care based on patients' disease, symptoms, and response to treatmentEducates patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects and symptom managementCoordinates with inter-disciplinary team to ensure continuity of careRefers patients, families and caregivers as appropriate to other clinical resources/professionals such as social work, home health care, clinical nutrition, etc.Implements, evaluates and modifies plan of careIntegrates research and evidence based knowledge into clinical practiceUses critical thinking and the nursing process to assess and meet the needs of patients by providing care coordination throughout the cancer continuumAssesses educational needs of patients, families, and caregivers taking into consideration barriers to care (e.g., literacy, language, cultural influences, comorbidities)Assesses patient needs and matching unmet needs with appropriate services and referrals and support services, such as dietitians, providers, social work, and financial servicesAdheres to unit policies and procedures compliant with regulatory requirements documentation; follows FDA, FACT, CAP and other regulatory requirements and guidance.Assesses patient and donor medical history and clinical condition for procedural concerns, risks and contraindications to apheresisPerforms donor screenings and reviews donor health history questionnaires, justifications and other related documentation related to apheresis proceduresMonitors patient/donor response and uses real-time visual assessment of color and blood layer separation to guide appropriate technical and medication adjustments, ensuring accurate collection and patient safety Communicates with medical and Apheresis provider teams to address potential and immediate clinical concernsProcesses apheresis products, including labeling and deliveryAccepts rotating on-call assignment for evenings, weekends and holidays.Ability to work in different clinical care locations (involves the ability to push/pull >40-pound wheeled machines)Assist in policy and procedure development, review, revision and implementation.Qualifications Required: Graduate from an accredited school of nursingMust have current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license or current NLC multistate license (MSL); and MSL primary state of residence must be updated to WA within 60 days of hire. This requirement may be waived under specific circumstances, subject to approval.Applicants that do not have previous oncology experience will be provided additional training and supportCurrent BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two yearsAdditional certification may be required dependent upon department.Critical thinking; the ability to practice the cognitive skills of analyzing, applying standards, discriminating, information seeking, logical reasoning, predicting, and transforming knowledgeAbility to develop clinical judgment.Time Management skills; the ability to organize and manage time and tasks independentlyAbility to communicate effectively by looking and listening for cues, asking open-ended questions, exploring cues, using pauses, screening responses, and clarifying response.Ability to effectively listen by using reflecting, acknowledging, summarizing, empathizing, and paraphrasing skill.Ability to effectively provide information by checking what information the person knows already, giving small amounts of information at a time, using clear terms and avoiding jargon, avoiding detail unless it is requested, checking for understanding, and pausing and waiting for a response.Builds therapeutic and trusting relationships with patients, families, and caregivers through effective communication and listening skillsMust be able to differentiate between colors and pass a standardized color vision screen test to perform this role. Preferred: Bachelor of Science in NursingTwo years of nursing experience preferred.The hourly pay range for this position is from $54.78 to $101.42, which includes the per diem differential, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
