About John Jay’s Sociology Department The Sociology Department at John Jay has 24 full-time faculty members. Our faculty are scholar-educators who conduct research and teach on a broad range of topics and subfields in the disciplines of sociology and criminology. The department offers majors and minors in both Sociology and Criminology as well as a certificate and minor in Dispute Resolution. We serve over 2,000 students across our majors. The teaching load at John Jay is 3-3. Position Overview John Jay College of Criminal Justice invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in the Department of Sociology, to begin in Fall 2027. We are seeking: A criminologist with expertise and an active research agenda in criminological theory and the intersection of criminal law and race and/or crime and racial subjectivities. Candidates with quantitative skills are preferred. A sociologist with expertise and an active research agenda in race and ethnicity and/or key subfields in sociology through the lens of race and ethnicity (e.g., sociology of education, gender, sexualities, sociology of the family, urban sociology, environmental sociology, sociology of work, culture). Qualifications Ph.D. degree in Sociology, Criminology, or a related area. ABD applicants will be considered but their degree must be completed by May 31, 2027. Also required are scholarly productivity while teaching successfully, a willingness to participate in departmental and college service, and the ability to work with others for the good of our institution and academic community. Candidates who have experience teaching Hispanic and minority students will be strongly considered. Candidates are expected to bring enthusiasm and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Compensation $59,256- $114,091 Salary commensurate with education and credentials.
