Staff Software Engineer, Backend Platform

Salary: $221,250 - 348,500 per year Requirements:

• We are seeking a Staff or Principal-level software engineer with 10+ years of backend engineering experience.
• We need deep expertise in computation, performance tuning, database and storage optimization, and systems architecture.
• We value experience with parallel execution and caching strategies, especially when working with remote data warehouses and their trade-offs.
• We look for a strong systems thinker with sound intuition around storage, database performance, algorithms, and data structures.
• We expect a proven track record of solving complex, large-scale system design challenges involving significant data and operational complexity.
• We need someone who is comfortable writing code, reviewing teammates code, and turning ambiguous problems into well-reasoned technical solutions.
• We want the ability to shape multi-quarter roadmaps with clear milestones for ambitious technical designs.
• We require strong communication skills and comfort leading technical work within a remote-first team.
• We require experience with Python and/or TypeScript; experience with both is a plus.
• Nice-to-have experience includes Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud infrastructure.
• Some frontend experience is a bonus, even though this is a backend-focused role.

• We will have you evolve our execution architecture, including the graph-based system that compiles, plans, and runs user notebooks.
• We expect you to design and build new compute components that make execution faster and smarter.
• You will develop parallel execution and caching approaches that lower latency and reduce unnecessary trips to external data warehouses.
• You will instrument complex systems to detect, explain, and troubleshoot performance issues for both our team and our customers.
• You will partner with engineering and product to enable new platform capabilities, including building an internal query language that compiles to the right dialect for any connected warehouse.
• You will write and review technical proposals and mentor engineers so ambitious designs are implemented effectively.
• You will define long-term technical direction and roadmap plans with clear quarterly milestones.
