The Opportunity In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Function in a lead wastewater process engineer role as a technical specialist in the areas of conventional wastewater treatment Use processes such as physical/chemical primary treatment, conventional activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, fixed-film processes, membrane bio-reactors (MBR), sidestream treatment, tertiary filtration, and disinfection Provide technical guidance over a process team, supervise engineering staff on projects, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary design teams to implement complex treatment solutions The Team Black & Veatch Process Engineers develop technical solutions that are critical to winning work and drive design deliverables for critical infrastructure projects with community benefits. Why BV’s Process Engineering Team The work is rewarding and meaningful The team is comprised of supportive and appreciative professionals Career opportunities exist in many rapidly expanding business solutions Key Responsibilities Engineering Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables, including process models, process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, tradeoff studies, and master planning studies Typically supports multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges Serves as a technical specialist with knowledge and skillset providing guidance to project teams in conventional and/or emerging wastewater treatment systems Performs complex research, including applied research activities involving bench, pilot, and full-scale testing to select or assess performance of treatment processes and incorporating the data into process models Develops recommendations for appropriate treatment processes, equipment and/or materials selection Oversees collection, assimilation, analysis, and management of data for process modeling and design work Prepares process models and carries out complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles Client Focus Responsible for assisting with identification of key client interests and drivers for ongoing projects and new business prospects and may determine the key clients in some instances Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops creative solutions and approaches to accommodate our clients’ goals and objectives Provides support to business development or pursuit activities, including involvement in pre-positioning meetings, proposal development, client interviews, identification of winning sales messages Attends and presents on state-of-the-art wastewater treatment projects and thought leadership ideas at local, regional and national conferences People Management Actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring to junior engineers May assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any performance improvement actions required for junior engineers Participate in coaching opportunities, career development planning, learning/training, and development of junior staff Engineering Standards Provides guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes related to water quality and treatment Assists in developing, maintaining and updating engineering standards; provides technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines Quality / Continuous Improvement Independently applies knowledge and complies with Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks May be responsible for ensuring compliance with Black & Veatch quality program Provides related guidance and direction to others Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects Resource Management Implements resource management strategy Manages engineering resources for small groups Administrative Ensures policies, procedures, and processes are effectively implemented and communicated for workgroup Ensures adherence to corporate and division programs May approve expense reports Minimum Qualifications Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program Minimum of 11 years related work experience All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, as applicable by law Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering preferred 10 years of experience in wastewater treatment with at least 5 years in water quality and treatment Advanced knowledge of process design for municipal wastewater; applicable design guides and standards Experience with process simulators such as BioWin, GPS-X, Sumo, and/or Simba Established leadership skills with deep understanding of consulting, project execution, client services, and business development Strong written and oral communication; drive for results; planning and team leadership capabilities Certifications Professional engineering license from any US state or ability to obtain one within 2 years of employment is required.
