MISSION OF THE ROLE

The Inorganic Group Leader plays an essential role in leading the Inorganic/Nutrition laboratory testing group, providing high quality testing services to clients through continuous sample flow while maintaining the QA/QC conditions of the department. This role ensures testing and method development are conducted properly while managing procedural efficiency and effectiveness to support the lab's broader mission and objectives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan and supervise the daily operation of the Inorganic/Nutrition laboratory testing group, ensuring punctual sample flow, quality, accuracy, consistency, and completeness of results. Assume technical and analytical responsibilities as necessary.
• Consult with other department supervisors to allocate workload assignments based on current personnel resources.
• Counsel employees in the Inorganic/Nutrition department regarding challenges encountered.
• Provide performance management of department staff in accordance with company policies, supporting technical and professional growth.
• Coordinate management of department resources in cooperation with the Laboratory Manager, including staffing and equipment allocation and maintenance of general lab supplies.
• Assist the Laboratory Manager in collaboration with other department supervisors, with coordinating laboratory operations for the Inorganic/Nutrition Group and other department chemists.
• Lead the research, development, and implementation of the latest Inorganic/Nutrition technologies and methods.
• Support the Quality Management System and regulatory compliance in cooperation with the QA Manager. Respond to QA findings or corrective actions for department activities. Implement data validation, internal quality control, and process review steps as needed to ensure data quality and maintain laboratory accreditations.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and promotion of laboratory operations through market research and participation in internal and external trainings, networking events, conferences, trade shows, and other opportunities. Provide technical insights to laboratory management.
• Implement and enforce safety regulations and codes. Work safely, using appropriate safeguards and personal protective equipment, to prevent injury to self or coworkers. Report all accidents or unsafe working conditions to the safety committee or management.
• Act as a technical resource for sales and client inquiries.
• Provide training and serve as a resource and mentor to Chemist 1, 2, and 3 positions.
• Support Chemist 2 and 3 through review of data packages submitted by chemists in the Inorganic/Nutrition department and other departments as needed or directed.
• Perform the responsibilities and duties of Chemist 1, 2, and 3 as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manages direct reports in Chemist 1, 2, and 3 positions within the Inorganic/Nutrition department.
• Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including interviewing and training employees, planning and directing work, appraising performance and supporting career development, addressing complaints and reporting them to the Laboratory Manager, and resolving problems.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related science from a four year college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience in a lab setting.
• Proven ability to work independently, with a thorough understanding of department specific instruments, including conventional, MS, MSMS, and HR MSMS Orbitrap detectors, along with other emerging technologies' operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Analytical method troubleshooting and development.
• Successful experience mentoring and training others, particularly in extraction, analytical, and instrument methodology.
• Successful experience collaborating across different business departments.
• Strong connections with relevant external organizations.
• Familiarity with the laboratory business environment.
• Track record of driving improvement and learning initiatives.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• High emotional intelligence.
• Good cultural awareness and the ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds.
• Experienced user of MS Office and Adobe Acrobat.
• Experience Preferred
• Experience with high resolution accurate mass spectrometry (HRMS) and/or other cutting edge technologies.
• Experience with new instrument implementation and validation.
• Experience with sample processing and extraction method development, particularly for pesticides and process contaminants in food matrices.
• Knowledge of other relevant technologies and markets.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, and quadratic equations, and to apply mathematical operations to tasks such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and work with several abstract and concrete variables.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

On the job training in company operating systems, including maintenance and operation of laboratory extraction and analytical equipment, and successful completion of the Initial Demonstration of Capability (IDOC) for existing SOPs and other laboratory procedures.
