AIS Watercraft Inspector

Job Overview The Watercraft Inspector serves to inform and educate the public about the threats of ecologically harmful aquatic invasive species to Minnesota's waters. Inspectors work at public water access sites, providing information to watercraft users and conducting brief surveys while inspecting watercraft for invasive species. Other duties include assisting the coordinator with access postings, assisting Law Enforcement with access checks, invasive plant removal, and conducting research in partnership with other departments, organizations and natural resource projects. This is a seasonal non‑exempt position. There is neither a guarantee of continual hours nor future employment, and no county benefits are provided except as mandated by state and federal law. Employment will not extend beyond seven (7) months from the start date. This is a safety‑sensitive position. Positions and Compensation Level I Watercraft Inspector : Requires attendance and passing of an MN DNR inspection training course. Responsibilities include public education, watercraft inspections for aquatic invasive species, documentation, reporting, on‑site surveys, and sample collection. Pay range is $15.00–$18.50 per hour. Level II Watercraft Inspector : Requires the same training as Level I plus an MN DNR decontamination training course. In addition to Level I responsibilities, a Level II inspector is certified to perform decontamination services using hot, high‑pressure water and is required to drive county vehicles. Pay range is $16.00–$19.00 per hour. Lead Watercraft Inspector : Requires Level II certification and includes additional leadership and administrative responsibilities such as employee training and supervision, scheduling, inventory, and oversight of day‑to‑day operations. Pay range is $18.00–$22.00 per hour. Responsibilities Educate the public on invasive species program and issues. Distribute written information to watercraft users. Inspect watercraft for invasive species. Conduct verbal survey and inspection inventory. Document and record research activities. Provide excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with the public in both office and field settings. Work independently with minimal supervision. Communicate effectively. Qualifications and Requirements At least 18 years of age. Available to work weekends, weekdays and holidays on a regular basis throughout employment (approximately May through September) between 6am–8pm. A valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License.
