Central Texas Editor (contract)

We are seeking an editor to join Public Health Watch’s growing team in Austin, TX, guiding investigative work focused primarily— but not entirely — on health inequities in Central Texas. This editor will play a lead role in overseeing several accountability-driven projects and reporters at any given time, while developing and maintaining collaborations with partner newsrooms across Texas and the United States. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to Central Texas. Compensation range: $80,000 to $90,000/year for an average of 30 hours/week. This is a contract role that does not include benefits. About Public Health Watch Public Health Watch is the only nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom in the United States dedicated exclusively to investigating life-threatening public health inequities. Our mission is to improve people’s well-being through rigorous, data‑driven journalism. Based in Texas, we report throughout the country, with an emphasis on the Southwest. Our team comprises subject‑matter experts led by one of America’s most accomplished public health journalists. We are not advocates – rather, fact‑driven journalists who tell stories no one else is telling. We collaborate with newsrooms around the U.S. to ensure both targeted and broad distribution of our stories. We emphasize partnerships that give resource‑constrained local news outlets the ability to do ambitious reporting they’d otherwise never be able to do. Responsibilities Lead Public Health Watch’s coverage of health inequities in Central Texas, with a focus on developing long‑term investigations and, when warranted, quick follow‑up stories. Manage and coach reporters through complex, data‑driven stories that incorporate community‑based reporting and policy‑heavy accountability journalism. Promote a collaborative, supportive newsroom culture that prioritizes collective success, journalistic rigor, inclusivity and shared growth. Qualifications At least 10 years of investigative newsroom experience, with at least five years of experience editing and managing reporters. Strong communication skills with an emphasis on cross‑newsroom collaboration. We’re a small team where all reporters and editors work closely with one another, regardless of a story’s subject matter or focus. Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills, with experience meeting tight deadlines, managing multiple projects and executing under pressure. Additional Information This is a contract role that does not include benefits. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the Central Texas area and must be eligible to work in the U.S. The compensation range for this position is $80,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, for an average of 30 hours of work per week.
