Economic Services Caseworker I - (Adult Medicaid)

Job Overview Gaston Social Services: Protecting, caring for and empowering children and adults who are temporarily or permanently unable to care for themselves through the administration of federal, state and county programs focused on improving the well-being of our citizens. The goal of the Gaston County Human Services Center and Division of Social Services is to foster an agency that is professionally responsive to our citizens' needs through daily caring outreach and simultaneously serve as an advocate for those in need. Salary Range $16.88 to $19.62 per hour. Responsibilities Complete initial policy and procedure training, including classroom and online learning, and determine initial and ongoing eligibility in Adult Medicaid and related programs. Interview clients, record information on required forms and in computer systems, investigate and verify documents, and consult with supervisory personnel on complex case actions; make computations to determine appropriate financial assistance. Conduct follow‑up evaluations on clients according to a defined schedule and communicate with representatives, attorneys, nursing and assisted living facilities, and hospital personnel to advise of needed information or case outcomes. Advise applicant of approval or denial of benefits or services; provide explanation of right of appeal and client responsibilities for continued benefits or services; prepare hearing summaries and attend local and state hearings. Read and interpret written policies and procedures applicable to federal, state and local laws related to public service assistance; use the online NC Fast Program, Manuals, and DSS Administrative Letters as appropriate. Be available to work mandatory emergency shelters and other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school graduate. Three years of clerical work with public contact. NC Fast Core Certification and Level 1 Core Trainings within 90 days of employment. Legal Requirements The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
