Registered Nurse - Pre-Operative & Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Job Summary

Join a dedicated team as a Pre-Operative and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Registered Nurse at a community hospital in Ithaca, New York. This role is integral to providing high-quality care for patients undergoing a diverse range of surgical procedures.

The facility features 7 operating rooms, supporting specialties including Neuro, Plastics, ENT, Breast, General, GYN, Urology, Ortho, Vascular, and Endoscopy. As an RN in this unit, you will be responsible for preparing patients for surgery and providing critical post-operative recovery care, ensuring patient safety and comfort through vigilant monitoring and intervention.

This is a contract position focused on night shift coverage, contributing to seamless patient flow and comprehensive care within a fast-paced surgical environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive pre-operative patient assessments, including medical history review, vital sign monitoring, and patient education.
• Provide expert post-anesthesia care, monitoring patients for complications, managing pain, and ensuring stable recovery from anesthesia.
• Administer medications safely and accurately, including pain management protocols.
• Monitor and interpret vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and other physiological data, intervening as necessary.
• Manage airways, oxygen therapy, and ventilator support for post-operative patients.
• Assess and manage surgical sites, drains, and tubes.
• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
• Educate patients and families on post-operative care instructions and discharge planning.
• Maintain accurate and thorough electronic health records.

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of New York.
• Minimum of 1-2 years of recent experience in Pre-Operative or Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) settings.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification in Post-Anesthesia Nursing (CPAN) or Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nursing (CAPA).
• Experience in a multi-specialty surgical environment.
• Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
