Data Analyst

The Data Analyst will read, clean, and analyze data from various systems, create data visualizations, and present the visualizations with a focus on raising data literacy within the region. Through analysis and visualization of data, KIPP SoCal team members will be able to access and analyze data to drive decisions in the best interests of our students for years to come. Success in this role requires the application of technical expertise, problem solving, adaptability, strong organizational skills, and continuous self-directed learning.

Reporting to the Data Engineering Manager, the Data Analyst is responsible for the following:

Role Responsibilities: Regional Analytics Support

• Serve as a responsive and reliable analytical partner to stakeholders across the organization, completing ad hoc data analysis requests accurately and within established turnaround times.
• Design and develop analysis reports and dashboards that translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences including school leaders, HR, finance, and operations teams.
• Contribute to the prioritization and planning of short and long-term analytics needs across stakeholders, helping ensure the team's analytical capacity is directed toward the highest-impact work.
• Document all data analysis processes and methodologies thoroughly, creating transparency between data producers and end users and building organizational knowledge that reduces dependency on any single team member.

Role Responsibilities: Dashboard Development & Data Visualization (Tableau)

• Build, maintain, and continuously improve Tableau dashboards that surface meaningful insights from student information, assessment, HR, and survey data for a variety of stakeholder audiences.
• Translate complex analytical findings and technical concepts into clear, accessible visualizations and narratives that empower non-technical stakeholders to understand and act on data confidently.
• Maintain and update existing dashboards to ensure accuracy, relevance, and alignment with evolving organizational needs and data structures.
• Embed and maintain Tableau dashboards on the organizational website, ensuring pages are accurate, current, and accessible to all stakeholders who rely on them.

Role Responsibilities: Data Querying & Transformation (SQL & Google BigQuery)

• Write efficient, well-documented SQL queries to support ad hoc analysis requests, dashboard development, and reporting needs across the organization.
• Create and maintain views and connected Google Sheets within Google BigQuery that are accessible, reliable, and reusable by other data team members.
• Build and update tables in BigQuery as needed, ensuring data is structured, accurate, and aligned with established data standards and governance protocols.
• Manage Google Secrets responsibly, including creating, updating, and deprecating usernames and passwords in accordance with organizational security standards.

Role Responsibilities: Data Modeling (dbt)

• Develop and maintain dbt models that generate clean, well-structured master tables serving as the foundation for dashboards and reports across the organization.
• Write and maintain dbt tests that enforce data quality standards, ensuring that models produce accurate, consistent, and trustworthy outputs.
• Monitor and resolve dbt test warnings proactively, addressing data quality issues before they surface in downstream dashboards or reports.

Role Responsibilities: Version Control & Collaboration (Git)

• Manage personal Git branches with discipline and consistency, following established branching conventions and keeping work organized and well-documented.
• Submit clear, well-described pull requests for all updates to the main branch, providing sufficient context for reviewers to evaluate changes efficiently.
• Participate in pull request reviews, providing constructive and technically sound feedback that upholds the team's standards for code quality and data model integrity.

Role Responsibilities: Scripting & Automation (Python)

• Apply foundational Python skills to support analytical workflows, including minor code modifications, debugging, and scripting tasks that increase efficiency and reduce manual effort.
• Collaborate with analytics engineers and data engineers to identify opportunities where Python can be leveraged to automate or streamline analytical processes.

Role Responsibilities: Research & Statistical Analysis

• Apply statistical methods and analytical frameworks to project data outcomes, model trends, and support evidence-based planning across academic and operational functions.
• Document all research projects thoroughly including methodology, assumptions, findings, and limitations, and communicate results to stakeholders in a clear, accessible, and actionable format.
• Partner with school and organizational leaders to frame research questions, interpret findings in context, and translate insights into concrete recommendations that drive organizational planning and decision-making.

Role Responsibilities: Organizational Website Support (WordPress)

• Create and maintain organizational website pages with embedded Tableau dashboards, ensuring pages are accurate, up to date, and accessible to all stakeholders.
• Support team members and end users in navigating and troubleshooting the site through helpdesk tickets, responding promptly and resolving issues with care and clarity.
• Monitor and respond to comments on Tableau dashboard pages, addressing questions and feedback in a timely and helpful manner.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree required in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
• Experience: Experience in a data analyst, business intelligence, or related analytical role; experience working with large, complex datasets across multiple source systems; experience building and maintaining dashboards and data visualizations for diverse stakeholder audiences; experience in an educational or nonprofit organization preferred but not required; experience working within a collaborative, cross-functional data team preferred
• Technical Skills: Proficient in SQL with demonstrated ability to write efficient, well-documented queries against large datasets; proficient in Tableau or a comparable data visualization platform with experience building and maintaining dashboards for non-technical audiences; experience with Google BigQuery or a comparable cloud data warehouse; familiarity with dbt or a comparable data modeling tool, with the ability to build, test, and maintain data models; working knowledge of Git and version control practices including branching, pull requests, and code review; basic proficiency in Python with experience in minor code modifications, debugging, and scripting; familiarity with Google Workspace tools including Google Sheets and connected data sources; experience with WordPress or a comparable content management system preferred but not required

Compensation & Benefits

• KIPP SoCal Public Schools offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience in a similar position. The salary range for this position is $69,076 to $93,252. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint of $81,164 depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budget allocated for this role.
