HEAD CUSTODIAN

POSITION SUMMARY

The Head Custodian is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all custodial operations to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained facility. This role includes supervising custodial staff, assigning daily tasks, and monitoring work quality.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean which includes: snow removal, and/or sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
• Maintains exterior and immediate grounds of building by removing leaves from entryways, window wells, picking up litter, etc.
• Checks daily to insure that all exit doors are clear, operating, and remain locked throughout the day
• Cleans corridors during the day as necessary.
• Supervises and performs the daily cleaning, sanitizing, and minor maintenance of the building
• Makes such minor building repairs such as changing light bulbs, adjust furniture, maintain lockers, hang and move bulletin boards etc.
• Reports major repairs needed promptly through the District computerized work order system
• Reports immediately any damage to district property.
• Remains on school premises during school hours, and when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required.
• Assumes responsibility as necessary for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured
• Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements in a timely manner
• Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair of equipment used in daily operations
• Moves and assembles furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by Administration.
• Capability to use hand and small power tools in a safe manner
• Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
• Is responsible for regularly checking on other custodial employees in his/her building to determine they are on the job and doing their assigned work adequately as well as training new custodians and periodically reviewing the workload of the custodial staff and making any necessary changes that will better serve the district while maintaining a team atmosphere
• Is responsible for responding to alarm calls from the Police and Fire Department.
• Is responsible for setting the example of reliability and dependability for others to emulate
• Performs minimum weekly inspections of playground equipment
• Other duties assigned by the Operations and Maintenance Manager and/or Administration

QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or equivalent

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The role requires the ability to perform various physical tasks, including standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, lifting, and bending, as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. The work environment may involve exposure to typical levels of noise and activity associated with a school and on a school bus setting. REPORTS TO: Director of Maintenance and Operations

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Hourly rate, length of work year and ongoing service shall be determined by the Board of Education.
