Gas Field Technician

Job Title

This position performs duties in support of the operations of the city's natural gas distribution system.

Examples Of Duties

Essential duties include:

• Investigating, identifying, and repairing gas leaks.
• Completing reports and maintaining related documentation.
• Responding to customer questions and concerns.
• Inspecting gas piping for atmospheric corrosion and leaks.
• Performing new line installations.
• Performing meter sets and change-outs.
• Assisting in the construction of regulator stations.
• Performing field duties pertaining to gas system infrastructure.
• Locating and marking underground gas lines.
• Disconnecting and reconnecting gas services.
• Performing weekly vehicle inspections.
• Loading and unloading parts and materials.
• Participating in facilities and landscaping maintenance.
• Assisting with training unqualified personnel.
• Performing inventory as needed.
• Performing landscaping as needed.
• Participating in on-call rotation schedule and responding to after-hours emergencies.
• Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
• Operating heavy equipment such as backhoe, trackhoe, dump truck, etc.
• Pouring and finishing concrete.
• Performing related duties.

Supplemental Information

Supervisory controls include general instructions from the Gas Assistant Director, with spot-checks for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include NACE standards, the State of Georgia Code Title 46, the Code of Federal Regulations, the Natural Gas Fuel Code, city and county ordinances, and city and department policies and procedures.

The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance and repair of the natural gas system. Successful performance contributes to the efficient and effective resolution of problems and the delivery of efficient utility services to customers.

Contacts are typically with coworkers, other department personnel, contractors, vendors, property owners, customers, and the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, walking, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

The work is typically performed in a stockroom, warehouse, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and natural gas. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Supervisory and management responsibility: None.

Minimum qualifications include:

• High school or equivalent.
• One to two years of service.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Retirement

• Retirement plans are Defined Contribution (401a), and Deferred Compensation (457b).
• The 401a (City makes a 4% contribution beginning on first pay period after hire date)
• 457b (Employee contributions only)
• If an employee contributes at least 4% into the 457b, which is voluntary, the City will make an additional 6% contribution into the 401a, totaling 10% into the employee's 401a.
• Each contribution is a percentage of the employee's earnings for that pay period.
• There is a graduated vesting schedule into the 401a plan.
• One year - 20%
• Two years 40%
• Three years 60%
• Four years 80%
• Five years 100%

Protection

• There is City paid short-term disability, long-term disability, accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) and life insurance that pays two times the employee's annual salary. Employees can opt into supplemental life insurance for self, spouse and children and pay the premium.

• First year of service 3.692 hours per pay period (Department Directors accrue PTO hours at a rate of 5.538 from first day and moving forward until after ten years of service).
• 1-5 years of service 5.538 hours per pay period
• 5-10 years of service 7.384 hours per pay period
• 10-15 years of service 9.230 hours per pay period
• Over 15 years of service 11.076 hours per pay period
• Salaried employees are given 40 hours of Comp Vacation on January 1st of each year, that must be used by December 31st of that same year.

Pay Interval

• Employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis; pay periods begin on Sunday and payday is every other Thursday. There is a mandatory direct deposit requirement.

Tuition Reimbursement

• Tuition Reimbursement towards associate's, bachelor's or master's degrees, available to all full-time employees after one year of employment. (exclusions apply)
