Director of Marketing and Communications

Assistant Director, University CenterThe Assistant Director supports the daily operations of the University Center (UC) and serves as a key member of the professional staff team. This role oversees a 200,000-square-foot facility, coordinates and supports event logistics, and provides leadership to event coordination and student marketing staff. The position plays a critical role in delivering exceptional event experiences, maintaining facility operations, and fostering collaboration across campus partners.ResponsibilitiesReservation & Event ManagementProvides logistical planning support for UTC and external events in UC-managed spacesProcesses and confirms reservations using the 25Live space reservation systemConsults with event organizers on room layouts, technology needs, and staffing requirementsCoordinates with campus partners (Catering, Parking, UTC Police, etc.) to ensure successful eventsAssists with room setups, equipment configuration, and troubleshooting as neededStaff Supervision & SupportSupervises the University Center CoordinatorSupports recruitment, training, and evaluation of approximately 25 student staffOversees the student marketing team and ensures alignment with departmental goalsFacility OversightAssists with the daily operation and oversight of the University CenterBuilds relationships with campus departments and UC tenants to address operational needsPartners with facilities and custodial teams to maintain a safe and welcoming environmentParticipates in an on-call rotation to respond to evening and weekend issuesMarketing & CommunicationsProvides oversight of the UC marketing and social media student teamAssists with developing and scheduling promotional contentEnsures social media activities align with university policies and branding standardsPromotes campus events and collaborates with other departments on marketing initiativesKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to manage multiple events at various stages simultaneouslyAbility to communicate effectively with students, departments, and external clientsAbility to move, set up, and break down event equipment (tables, chairs, technology)Knowledge of event management practices and customer service principlesStrong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skillsPreferred:Knowledge of 25Live, Social Tables, or similar event management platformsExperience with audiovisual equipment (projectors, microphones, sound systems)QualificationsRequired QualificationsBachelor's degreeTwo (2) years of professional experience within event management; orTwo (2) years of graduate-level work plus at least 1 year of professional experience working within event managementPreferred QualificationsExperience in a university center, student union, or campus events officeSupervisory experience (student staff, graduate assistants, or full-time staff)Job InfoJob Identification 8665Job Category Communication & MktgLocations 601 East 5th Street, Chattanooga, TN, 37403, US
