Overview The Radiologic Technologist performs all phases of technical diagnostic imaging using X-ray equipment to capture and develop images for medical diagnosis. The technologist supports OHSU’s mission by delivering high-quality, cost-effective, family-oriented service and collaborates across education, research and clinical leadership. The role involves working with infant, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Responsibilities Imaging: Provides quality images with accuracy and efficiency, using optimal skills and knowledge of all equipment. Rotates through general radiology exams/areas as needed to meet workflow requirements. Utilizes the VIP transportation system to arrange patient delivery. Positions patients for diagnostic radiology exams according to department procedures, training, and machine requirements with a high regard for safety and patient care. Operates radiology equipment, determines and sets exposure factors, and uses techniques to ensure accurate, high-quality images with minimal and acceptable repeat rates. Uses computer image processing to select, process, optimize and archive images to PACS. Completely tracks exams in the Radiology Information System. Develops and presents images and related patient information to radiologist for diagnosis. Assists with patient transport by moving patients using standard procedures. Assists in the training of Radiologic Technology Students and adheres to department policy on supervision of student technologists. Documentation Gathers complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely service. Identifies patients correctly by checking identity per department procedure. Reviews patient charts and orders to ensure correct examinations. Labels images with demographics, position and other needed documentation; follows department policy on the use of anatomical markers. Logs activities, gathers charging information and charges exams as required. Follows department and hospital procedures and policies. Performs quality control and quality assurance, records results and reports variance from normal equipment function. Personal & Patient Care And Safety Provides personal and patient care and safety using professional judgment in accordance with written standards to prevent injury to self or others. Protects patients and others by using proper machine settings and radiation safety standards. Practices universal and blood and body fluid precautions, and sterile practices. Applies knowledge of anatomy and physiology to ensure appropriate and effective care for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Maintains awareness of patient status and responds to needs. Explains procedures to patients to address questions and ease anxiety. Reports safety concerns or occurrences to the manager and submits occurrences to the online Patient Safety Net (PSN). Professional Behavior Maintains professional communications, appearance, conduct, punctuality, attendance and attitude to earn trust from physicians, patients and coworkers. Informs and educates patients and/or families about the exam performed. Uses professional judgment and presents a competent image to customers and staff. Manages stressful situations to promote positive outcomes. Keeps current in education (journals, books, in-services, seminars, etc.) in all areas assigned. Effective Use Of Resources Uses time, people and supplies effectively; works in a safe manner. Maintains a safe and clean work environment. Promotes cost effectiveness through proper use and conservation of supplies and equipment. Identifies potential cost-saving measures. Reports needed repairs or hazards to the appropriate department promptly. Reports on-the-job injuries and seeks medical attention as appropriate. Initiative Shows self-motivation, takes on projects willingly, and contributes new ideas. Identifies and solves problems. Supports improvement and innovation in the workplace. Demonstrates awareness of and supports OHSU departmental and operating unit goals through participation in continuous quality improvement and departmental activities. Promotes professional development and contributes to the growth of others. Be familiar with and comply with OHSU and Diagnostic Imaging department policies and procedures. Other Duties As Assigned Qualifications Required Qualifications Must be a graduate of an accredited diagnostic radiography program that meets current qualifications to take and pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) board examinations in Radiography upon hire. Student candidates must obtain the RT (R) (ARRT) certification within 6 months of their hire date. Must have demonstrated skills in: performing diagnostic imaging studies, radiation safety, effective use of equipment, record maintenance, infection control, quality control, compliance, patient communication, contrast media, problem solving, judgment, teamwork and taking initiative. Must be OBMI licensed. Must be ARRT eligible upon hire and ARRT registered within 6 months of hire date. BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation. Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation. Preferred Qualifications OHSU partnered Radiologic Technology program experience. Level 1 Trauma Center experience; Academic Medical Center experience.
