General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to operate a variety of heavy and light equipment and trucks. This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires two years with heavy and light equipment or closely related experience. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and capabilities of the equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance, and repair of water system components.
• Knowledge of potential hazards of the materials and equipment used in performing assigned tasks.
• Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
• Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in general maintenance, construction, and repair.
• Ability to understand and carry out specific oral or written instructions.
• Ability to work in unfavorable weather conditions for extended periods.
• Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
• Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Operates heavy and light equipment for installing, maintaining, operating, and repairing water lines.
2. Assists with installation of water mains, installation of valves, water taps and service lines, fire hydrants, manholes, pumps and meters; work is performed in high-traffic areas.
3. Performs inspection, condition assessments, minor maintenance and repairs of water pumps; writes work orders and assists in more complex maintenance and repairs.
4. Speaks with customers and handles customer service issues and complaints; provides excellent customer service.
5. Oversees the crew when the supervisor is unavailable, delegates work to the crew.
6. Ensures meters are working properly so customers are billed correctly, and water is working properly for all customers; collects data from water meters and inputs information into computer.
7. Changes out and sets new water meters; repairs water lines and services; makes taps on water mains; repairs and maintains hydrants.
8. Stocks, cleans and organizes truck and materials.
9. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment.
10. Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
