Performs technical work assisting in the maintenance and repair of water treatment pumps, gear drives, feeders and other related equipment. Serves as Treatment Floor Operator, performing daily equipment cleaning and filling treatment chemical tanks. Work is performed under general supervision. Repost 07/22/2026

Major Duties

1. Performs preventive maintenance on chemical feed systems, pumps, boilers, plant equipment and facilities; makes adjustments, repairs, and replacements based on written, verbal, and technical instructions.
2. Performs general plant maintenance, including painting, equipment repair, lubrication, roofing, masonry, and other building and equipment upkeep tasks.
3. Unloads and handles treatment chemicals and supplies, including lime, ferric chloride, carbon, sodium hypochlorite, fluoride, and polymers.
4. Cleans and maintains chemical feed equipment, clarifiers, wet wells, filters, and basins; performs general housekeeping duties. Ensure chemical day tanks are filled and feed systems operate properly.
5. Assists with repairs on complex machinery; assists Plant Electricians in maintaining and repairing electrical equipment.
6. Serves as a lead worker, providing guidance and training to Plant Laborers and temporary staff.
7. Performs seasonal grounds maintenance at the water plant and related properties, including mowing, trimming, landscaping, snow removal; installs and removes holiday lighting and displays.
8. Troubleshoots and performs problem resolution regarding equipment issues; follows maintenance schedules and standard procedures to complete preventive maintenance and assigned projects.
9. Maintains inventory records of treatment chemical quantities and completes related reports; documents work performed and maintains accurate service records within the plant maintenance program.
10. Adheres to all utility security policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and Risk and Resilience Assessment (RRA) documentation, to ensure the ongoing security and resilience of the water system's infrastructure, operations, and water quality.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Apprenticeship or formal training in machine shop operations, including lathe, milling machine, drill press, and welding, preferred.
• Two (2) years of experience as a Plant Laborer I or two (2) years progressively responsible experience in building, grounds, or equipment maintenance.

Licenses and Certifications

• Ability to obtain Aerial Lift Operator Training and Forklift Operator Certification within one (1) year of start in position.
• Possess and maintain a State of Michigan Driver's License.

Knowledge of

• Safety practices, including OSHA standards and safe work procedures in an industrial environment.
• Recordkeeping and maintenance documentation practices.
• Confined space and lockout/tagout procedures.

Skill In

• Use of diagnostic/testing equipment, hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.
• Reading and interpreting maintenance manuals, diagrams, and blueprints and apply them in daily work.
• Troubleshooting mechanical systems.

Ability to

• Prepare and maintain maintenance reports, logs, and inventory records
• Prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently with minimal supervision.
• Follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to established procedures.
• Properly use required personal protective equipment.
• Lead and train others.
• Demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, including the ability to diagnose issues, perform repairs, and complete preventive maintenance on treatment plant equipment.

Working Conditions

Working Conditions Work Environment Work is primarily performed in a municipal treatment plant environment with exposure to potentially hazardous materials, confined spaces, near moving mechanical parts, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions. This position requires the use of respiratory protective equipment in accordance with OSHA regulations. Employees must obtain medical clearance and successfully pass respirator fit testing as part of the City's Respiratory Protection Program. The ability to wear and use a respirator may be considered an essential function of this position. • Frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; occasionally up to 50 pounds.
• Frequent standing, walking; seldom sitting
• Frequent climbing of stairs, pushing, pulling, reaching with hands and arms, gross manipulation and operating a city vehicle to drive to other locations.
• Occasional climbing of ladders, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, fine manipulation, and ability to detect odors.
• Occasional exposure to high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock.
• Standard vision and hearing requirements, work is performed within a loud noise environment with hearing protection required to be worn under certain conditions.
• Ability to communicate detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, and quickly.
