Essential Job Duties The Advanced Locksmith Level 1 plays a critical role in supporting campus safety, security, and access control by providing advanced technical expertise, project leadership, and operational support for locksmith services across campus. In this role, you will help ensure NC State facilities remain secure and functional by applying your knowledge of locksmith systems, construction coordination, and campus standards to deliver high‑quality service to our campus partners. As an Advanced Locksmith Level 1, you will lead and mentor technicians, manage complex and high‑priority projects, and oversee hardware specifications, installation, and system compliance. You will review construction plans, develop accurate cost estimates, coordinate project timelines, and ensure timely completion of work orders while maintaining alignment with University standards and expectations. Key Responsibilities and Duties Include, but are Not Limited To Serve as a technical expert , guiding, directing, and coaching junior and contributing level technicians on application and installation techniques. Research critical information, including key bittings array, construction documents, and guidelines. Understand and apply Simple K enrollment process and procedures. Demonstrate the ability to review and verify construction plans and hardware specifications according to University specifications and construction guidelines. Proficiently work with hardware specification take‑offs. Handle project management tasks with a working knowledge of processes and timelines. Provide cost estimates and proposals for work, which includes evaluating and researching necessary requirements from vendor sources. Monitor and track all orders to ensure timely completion. Assist the supervisor in developing timelines and milestones by identifying critical and less critical activities. Allocate appropriate resources and time for the completion of one’s own work and that of the team, avoiding scheduling conflicts. Communicate effectively with customers regarding the necessary scope of work. Lead and generally oversee junior-level technicians, ensuring that both Junior and contributing level technicians have sufficient resources to complete jobs. Maintain clear verbal and written communication with supervisors, team members, and the public. Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 30–60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations. Perform tasks requiring standing for extended periods, working in confined spaces, and utilizing various tools. Safely climb and work from different types of ladders to access elevated or below‑grade areas (such as roofs, above‑ceiling spaces, and utility pits). Be exposed to and work in areas where insects or small animals are occasionally present. All essential tasks must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations. Other Responsibilities Serves as essential personnel for the University. This requires maintaining on‑call availability and reporting to work during adverse weather or alternate campus schedules. Responsibilities include assisting with snow and ice removal as directed. Manages all continuing education requirements and ensures the timely renewal of professional locksmith licenses. Oversees special projects and administrative assignments as delegated by the supervisor; performs other duties as assigned to support department goals. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Experience/Education High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis. Preferred Qualifications Extensive experience as a locksmith, preferably in an institutional setting, but not mandatory. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel. Familiarity with AiM work order systems is a plus, but not required. Membership in the Associated Institutional Locksmith Association or recognized industry organization is preferred. Certified Junior Level Certification and/or Fire Door Inspector Certification is advantageous but not mandatory. Required License or Certification Current North Carolina locksmith license, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, and must be maintained. Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
