Job Description

This Medical Assistant position supports an Internal Medicine clinic connected to a hospital, providing direct patient care and clinical support in a fast-paced, team-based environment. You will work closely with providers and another Medical Assistant to deliver high-quality care to a patient population of approximately 120–150 patients per month, performing rooming, vital signs, point-of-care testing, and electronic medical record documentation. This role offers a Monday–Friday daytime schedule with no weekends or holidays, strong mentorship from appreciative providers, and clear opportunities for professional growth within a supportive and friendly culture.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients efficiently and accurately, including greeting them, escorting them to exam rooms, and preparing them for their visit with the provider.
  • Obtain and document vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, weight, and other relevant measurements, and record signs and symptoms in the electronic medical record.
  • Complete and update patient medical history documentation in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Set up exam rooms and prepare equipment and supplies needed for provider examinations and procedures.
  • Assist providers with miscellaneous clinical tasks and tests as directed, adapting to the needs of the specialty practice.
  • Perform point-of-care tests such as urinalysis, strep tests, flu tests, pregnancy tests, and other tests as directed by the provider.
  • Schedule tests, radiology exams, and appointments with specialists as requested by providers, ensuring all necessary information is accurately entered into the electronic medical record.
  • Enter and update all check-in and check-out information in the electronic medical record to support accurate patient flow and documentation.
  • Complete prior authorizations as needed and notify the office referral specialist when an insurance referral is required.
  • Assist providers during office exams by collecting height, weight, body mass index, and other pertinent clinical information.
  • Update and maintain accurate immunization records in the electronic medical record.
  • Perform scheduled phone triage, including responding to patient medical questions, communicating test results, processing medication refill requests, and completing call-backs to patients.
  • Fax, call, or electronically transmit prescription refills as directed by providers, following established protocols.
  • Support walk-in patient care as needed, including triage, blood pressure checks, urinalysis, and medication sample requests.
  • Collect patient history and other relevant information from walk-in patients and relay it clearly to the provider.
  • Serve as a resource for visitors, providers, and staff by greeting everyone promptly and courteously and providing assistance as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently support the mission and values of the organization in all interactions with patients, colleagues, and visitors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership, including the practice administrator and practice site providers, to support clinic operations.
  • Conduct all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards, as well as organizational policies and procedures, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.
  • Use the electronic medical record and related systems for documentation, appointment scheduling, data entry, and coordination of patient care.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by maintaining an upbeat, cooperative attitude and stepping in to help colleagues as needed to ensure consistent patient flow.

Essential Skills

  • Active certification as a CMA (AAMA), RMA, or CCMA.
  • Successful completion and graduation from a recognized medical assistant training course or equivalent experience.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated experience performing core medical assistant duties, including rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, and providing basic patient care.
  • Proficiency using electronic medical record (EMR) or electronic health record (EHR) systems for documentation, scheduling, and data entry.
  • Ability to perform point-of-care tests such as urinalysis, strep tests, flu tests, and pregnancy tests as directed.
  • Basic phlebotomy skills, including blood draws and use of a centrifuge, as applicable to clinic needs.
  • Competence in appointment scheduling and coordinating tests, radiology exams, and specialist visits.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or the ability to obtain it as required.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing clinical and administrative duties.
  • Strong communication skills to handle phone triage, patient questions, test result discussions, and medication refill coordination.
  • Upbeat, positive, and outgoing attitude, with a willingness to step in and support the team to maintain smooth patient flow and positive patient interactions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2–3 years of experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is preferred.
  • Experience in family practice or women’s health settings is preferred.
  • Experience with point-of-care (POC) testing in an outpatient or clinic environment.
  • Prior experience working in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine clinics is beneficial.
  • Experience using EMR systems in general is preferred.
  • Bg in hospital or clinic settings, including familiarity with patient care workflows and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Comfort working with laboratory-related tasks such as handling specimens and operating a centrifuge, as needed.
  • Strong teamwork skills and a desire to grow within a healthcare network that offers clear career development opportunities.

Work Environment

This role is based in an Internal Medicine clinic within a hospital setting in Franklin, operating in a temperature-controlled environment designed for patient comfort and staff efficiency. You will work closely with two providers and one other Medical Assistant in a collaborative, team-based model that sees a steady patient volume. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with walk-in patients typically seen from 8:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., scheduled appointments from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a one-hour lunch break, and afternoon appointments from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with clinic close-out by 5:00 p.m. There is no weekend work and holidays are off, with only minimal overtime required as needed to support patient care. The clinic offers easy, free access to parking without the need for parking garages or navigating downtown traffic, contributing to a convenient and safe work setting. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.22 - $23.00/hr.
