Job Summary The Science Specialist designs professional learning experiences and resources for Granite School District teachers in curriculum, instructional strategies, differentiation, and assessment for science content in multiple modalities. The position focuses on promoting the implementation of the Utah Science with Engineering Education (SEEd) Standards with research-based practices using district-adopted tools. The Science Specialist will provide sustained support to Granite District teachers through a continuum of coaching and professional learning opportunities. Essential Functions Professional Learning & Coaching Provide professional learning experiences in curriculum, instructional strategies, differentiation, and assessment for science content in multiple modalities. Demonstrate/model teaching science strategies and content. Provide support for grade levels, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and individual teachers through coaching. Develop science curriculum materials and instructional resources. Select and requisition resources and instructional materials. Act as a liaison with the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) and other organizations as appropriate to the position. Participate in committees and task forces. Non-Essential Functions Other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge and Skills Pedagogical Mastery: Understands of and experiences implementing proficiency-based learning and SEEd science standards. Communication: Possesses strong oral and written communication skills. Technology Integration: Possesses strong computer and educational technological skills. Adult Learning Leadership: Accepts responsibility, is self-motivated, and demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain relationships with adult learners that foster a positive learning environment. Operational Efficiency: Displays effective multi-tasking and time management skills. Required Education, Training, and Qualifications Requires one of the following: A current Professional Educator License issued by the USBE with at least one of the following: Professional Secondary License Area of Concentration and at least one of the following professional endorsements: Science Core (6-8); Biology (1 or 2); Chemistry (1 or 2); Earth Science (1 or 2); or Physics (1 or 2). Professional Elementary License Area of Concentration (an Elementary STEM or Science endorsement is preferred). A current equivalent professional educator license from another state or country; individuals hired under this provision must obtain a Utah Professional Educator License by the end of their first school year of employment with the District. A master's degree in education or a related field is preferred. An Instructional Coach or Educational Technology endorsement is preferred. Required Prior Experience Requires a minimum of five (5) years of classroom teaching experience. Assigned Decision Making Curriculum Requisitioning: Authority to review, select, and recommend books and instructional materials for requisition within the guidelines of the Curriculum & Instruction department framework. Non-Supervisory Interaction Maintains effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff, district staff, and members of the community. Interacts and collaborates with employees, board members, patrons, vendors, administrators, and secretaries in schools. Supervisory Responsibility Not applicable. Budget Responsibility Not applicable. Work takes place in typical school and office environments. Requires travel between locations on an irregular basis. Duties include both indoor and outdoor responsibilities in all types of weather and air quality. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
