Overview (Duties Include But Are Not Limited)

• Maintain a relationship with departmental creative arts/art therapists/recreational/occupational therapists and social workers across command to ensure coordination with arts activities of other entities and to ensure clear delineation interface between clinical art therapy and recreational art activities.
• Provide/implement recreational arts activities to all referred patients and families to the various recreational arts programs. Patients and families can self-refer under the care of clinical providers.
• Maintain a calendar of arts activities taking place on the campuses, and provide this to chief, orthopedics and rehabilitation, or designee.
• Develop and implement programs for high quality arts activities, such as visiting artists, academic partnerships, arts mentorships, etc. based on interests of current population.
• Develop and implement survey tools for ongoing assessment and performance of the arts activities.
• Meet regularly with visiting artists, to assure sufficiency of training and support.
• Document the history of the arts program.
• Educate the community of the role of the recreational arts activities in healthcare.
• Maintain any registered status or licensure which is required to practice in their area of expertise, including continuing professional education, and will meet any other requirements in order to maintain a license, certificate, or professional registration in good standing. For those areas of expertise that do not require a license, candidate will have and maintain a form of recognized certification of competence in that field.
• May be required to travel to local and/or national meetings, conferences, etc.
• May be required to present at various local and national meetings and/or conferences.
• Maintain knowledge of community arts opportunities (education, publication, exhibition) in the national capital region and beyond. Make information available to participants and staff on a weekly basis through newsletter and calendar.
• Meet regularly with clinical teams on the trauma, behavioral health, and other clinical services, to assure congruence of recreational arts activities and clinical goals.
• Develop standards for administrative documentation of arts activities in medical records.
• Maintain programmatic/clinical awareness through multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure through clinical consultation that referrals are appropriate and ongoing.

Recreational Arts Activities To Include But Not Limited To The Following:

• Planning, preparing or and facilitation a regular schedule of open arts and writing activities for adults and children.
• Planning monthly programming including outings to Bethesda art galleries and DSLR camera workshops at the Washington School of Photography.
• Preparation and planning for upcoming four (4)-day workshops that provides a more in depth learning experience for patients to build refined skill sets for the arts; assisting participants in submitting work for publication.
• Planning and hosting success as an artist workshop to connect patients to community resources
• Organize, plan, and host open mic night at Workhouse Art Center.
• Reach out to various organizations and leaders to promote recreational art events/activities
• Coordinate with art therapists at the co-occurring partial hospitalization (cooph) program, intensive outpatient program (iop) to facilitate and support their needs for recreational arts activities.
• Coordinate with therapeutic service dog program to coordinate community reintegration outings with patients participating in both programs.
• Plan and facilitate inpatient recreational arts activities as requested by clinical and leadership staff.
• Attend staff meetings for various departments supported.
• Distribute weekly newsletter to participants along with other information about arts activities on and off base.
• Distribute monthly newsletters to providers to keep them apprised of art, writing, and off base activities available to them and their patients throughout the month.
• Create calendars/schedules of art activities.
• Document as required by supervisor for administrative purposes only to keep providers abreast of activities their patients are participating in.
• Coordinate with various departments and providers to welcome referred participants to arts activities.
• Maintain appropriate supplies.
• Handle arts program budget, maintain budgetary spreadsheet, handle invoicing activities and provide budgetary information to supervisor and contractor.
• Draft monthly metrics and activity reports.
• Maintain participant contact information as appropriate and confidentially according to participant release of approval.

Qualifications

• Possess a bachelor's degree or higher in arts program management, arts, education, or related field, or in a relevant healthcare discipline, from an accredited college or university.
• Must have and maintain basic life support (bls) certification as approved through the American Heart Association (aha).
• Possess experience in working with military/veteran patients is desired.
• Possess demonstrable skill in a variety of artistic media.
• Possess knowledge/experience in the role of arts in healthcare and arts in disabilities is required.
• Possess knowledge/experience with Adobe Creative Suite CS5 or higher is preferred.
• Possess ability to effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals in a therapeutic milieu.
• Possess knowledge/experience working with patients and families with traumatic brain injury/psychological health (tbi/ph) issues is required.
