Clinical Counselor

Volunteers of America Los Angeles (VOALA) is a non‑profit human services organization serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities in the Los Angeles area. VOALA offers a variety of social services including Head Start, Upward Bound, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low‑income housing, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

$32.24 – $33.94 per hour

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The VOALA Clinical Counsellor works with the Senior Program Manager and program staff to provide clinical counseling and crisis intervention to survivors of human trafficking, using a trauma‑informed, strengths‑based, culturally sensitive, survivor‑centered model.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist Case Managers with crisis counseling, needs assessments, and individual service plan development. Conduct individual and group clinical counseling for survivors and children, applying trauma‑informed care, positive youth development, Ending the Game, CBT, motivational interviewing, Seeking Safety, and harm reduction. Advocate for supportive services required by survivors and their children. Maintain case files and daily progress notes per VOALA and Cal OES protocol. Participate in care‑coordination teams to deliver intensity wrap‑around and aftercare. Assist with community awareness events, providing survivor awareness and identification training to law enforcement, FBOs, and CBOs. Build and maintain partnerships with community and government agencies. Respond to survivors on a 24/7 basis, coordinating with law enforcement as needed. Attend weekly supervision with Program Manager to process transference issues. Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Position requires on‑site presence daily. Provide clinical counseling and crisis intervention to survivors and children of survivors. Conduct evidence‑based training for staff. Respond to and intervene in crisis situations. Conduct clinical review of case files to monitor progress and effectiveness. Other duties as required.

MANDATED REPORTER

All employees are mandated reporters and must report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to the proper authorities.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIREMENTS:

Pass fingerprint clearance, background check, credit, references, employment and education verification. Ability to function under emotional stress and conflicts with difficult, uncooperative or potentially aggressive clients.

EDUCATION:

Master’s Degree in Social Work, Social Services, Public Administration, Public Health, or related field.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 3 years counseling experience with trauma‑informed care for homeless or vulnerable youth.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Active LSW, MFT, AFT, or ORSUDCC Level III certification. Priority for applicants who are survivors of human trafficking. Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.
