Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric Behavioral Health in Bangor, Maine

Psychiatric RN Job Details

• Position: Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric Psychiatric Nursing
• Location: Bangor, Maine
• Setting: Freestanding acute inpatient behavioral health facility serving pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients
• Patient Population: Primarily children and adolescents ages 5–18; may float to the adult psychiatric unit as needed
• Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,020–$2,130
• Contract: 13 weeks, starting November 23, 2026, through February 20, 2027
• Hours: 36 hours per week
• Shift Duration: 12-hour shifts
• Shift Times: 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
• Scheduling: Modified self-scheduling with every-other-weekend rotation and rotating holiday coverage
• Call: No on-call requirement
• Orientation: Facility and unit orientation during the first week, followed by transition to regular shifts
• Additional Details: Free parking and professional solid-color scrubs

Pediatric Psychiatric Nurse Job Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse license eligible for practice in Maine
• At least 1 year of inpatient psychiatric nursing experience
• Experience with pediatric or adolescent patients; a combination of psychiatric nursing and acute care pediatric experience may be considered
• Experience working with patients with autism or other behavioral health needs is valuable
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Maine CNA license, as required for the assignment
• Must be comfortable with redirection, de-escalation, behavioral safety interventions, activities of daily living, and close observation
• MOAB certification is required; on-site training will be provided
• Reliable, punctual, flexible, and able to work effectively in a team-based behavioral health environment

Psychiatric RN Responsibilities

• Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to pediatric and adolescent patients in an acute inpatient psychiatric setting
• Complete assessments, monitor patient status, administer care, and communicate changes to the psychiatric treatment team
• Support patients experiencing depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar disorder, trauma, self-harm, anger, and other behavioral health concerns
• Perform patient safety rounds approximately every 7.5 minutes and provide one-to-one observation when assigned
• Use therapeutic communication, redirection, and de-escalation techniques to support patient stability and safety
• Participate in physical holds or other safety interventions only when clinically necessary and in accordance with the least restrictive approach and facility policy
• Assist patients with activities of daily living and promote independence whenever appropriate
• Obtain EKGs and complete other clinical tasks within the nurse’s scope of practice
• Maintain accurate documentation using Cerner and paper-based systems as applicable
• Collaborate with psychiatric providers, therapists, behavioral health technicians, nursing leadership, and other members of the interdisciplinary team
• Float to the adult psychiatric unit when needed while maintaining safe, high-quality care
