A leading regional commercial construction firm is seeking a highly skilled Human Resources Manager to lead its HR function. This is a "true generalist" role designed for a hands-on practitioner who can navigate the complexities of both corporate office environments and field operations. The successful candidate will serve as a strategic partner to the executive leadership team while maintaining a "boots-on-the-ground" approach to employee relations, compliance, and talent management. Core Responsibilities Employee Relations & Culture Serve as the primary point of contact for all personnel matters, ensuring a fair and consistent application of company policies. Lead conflict resolution and internal investigations, balancing legal compliance with a focus on maintaining a positive, high-performance culture. Develop and implement initiatives to improve employee engagement and retention across office and field staff. Compliance & Risk Management Ensure strict adherence to federal, state (California-specific), and local employment laws, including Wage and Hour, EEOC, and FMLA/CFRA. Oversee and audit personnel files, I-9 compliance, and safety training documentation. Partner with Safety/Risk Management teams to handle Workers’ Compensation claims and ensure OSHA compliance. Full-Lifecycle Talent Acquisition Manage the end-to-end recruitment process for diverse roles, including Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators, and administrative staff. Enhance onboarding programs to ensure new hires are integrated effectively into the company’s safety protocols and culture. Total Rewards & Administration Oversee benefits administration, including annual renewals, open enrollment, and daily troubleshooting. Manage the performance review cycle, providing coaching to managers on delivering constructive feedback and setting KPIs. Coordinate with payroll to ensure accurate processing of complex construction payroll variables (e.g., prevailing wage, union vs. non-union considerations). Candidate Qualifications Experience: Minimum of 7–10 years of HR experience, with at least 3 years in a management capacity. Industry Knowledge: Direct experience in the Construction or Engineering sectors is highly preferred. Familiarity with project-based workforces is a significant plus. California Expertise: Deep understanding of California Labor Law is mandatory. Technical Skills: Proficiency in HRIS platforms and data-driven reporting (e.g., tracking "Time to Fill" or turnover metrics). Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field. PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SCP certification is preferred. Adaptability: Ability to transition seamlessly between executive boardrooms and active construction sites. Discretion: Experience managing confidential executive-level searches and sensitive personnel data.
