Assistant Controller

Assistant Controller Hybrid | Washington, DC Metro Area Compensation: $65–$75/hour About the Opportunity Our client, a well-established and mission-driven nonprofit organization with annual revenues exceeding $40 million , is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join its finance leadership team. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while supporting a complex nonprofit accounting environment. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, audits, and internal controls. This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional with strong nonprofit accounting experience and a collaborative leadership style. Key Responsibilities Assist in managing the month-end and year-end close processes. Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Oversee general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and journal entries. Support the annual audit and coordinate with external auditors. Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory reporting. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management. Monitor and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies. Supervise and mentor accounting staff while promoting process improvements. Support financial reporting to executive leadership and the Board of Directors. Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial data and reporting. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA strongly preferred. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience , including leadership responsibilities. Required experience working for a nonprofit organization with annual revenues of $40 million or greater. Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, fund accounting, and grant compliance. Experience managing audits and preparing financial statements. Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting/ERP systems. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Preferred Experience Experience with federally funded grants and contracts. Prior experience in a multi-entity or complex nonprofit environment. Background overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
