Senior Director of Philanthropy

The Brown - Museum of Arts & Sciences is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to join its leadership team as Senior Director of Philanthropy, taking responsibility for the museum's full portfolio of philanthropic revenue. About the role The Senior Director of Philanthropy will serve as The Brown's senior fundraising team member, overseeing individual and major gifts, corporate and foundation partnerships, membership giving, special event fundraising, planned giving and the annual fund. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will operate as a senior individual contributor, personally developing relationships with donors and funders and executing the museum's fundraising strategy. The role comes at an important time for The Brown as the institution undergoes a major transformation. The Senior Director will build on existing fundraising infrastructure, donor data and a three-year development plan rather than establishing the function from scratch. Key responsibilities The Senior Director of Philanthropy will: Develop and execute the museum's annual philanthropy plan Manage relationships with individual, corporate and foundation donors and funders Lead donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship Take ownership of the museum's sponsorship strategy Direct its foundation and government grant strategy and pipeline Coordinate with contracted grant-writing support Lead signature fundraising events, including sponsorship sales, procurement, budgets and post-event stewardship Grow the museum's membership giving programme Establish and maintain strong donor relations and stewardship practices Take ownership of fundraising systems, donor data and the museum's three-year development plan Work with the Chief Operating Officer and other departments to coordinate shared resources and support The role has no direct reports and is designed for an experienced fundraiser who is comfortable personally leading relationships and fundraising activity. About you Candidates should have a bachelor's degree and at least five to seven years of progressive nonprofit fundraising experience , spanning areas such as major gifts, corporate and foundation partnerships and special event fundraising. The Brown is looking for someone with demonstrated success in building or growing a comprehensive development function, including membership programmes and grant-funded initiatives. Experience with donor CRM and database systems is required; the museum currently uses Blackbaud Altru .
