Senior Coastal Engineer

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee‑owned environmental consulting firm with 50 years of experience serving projects across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeast. ESA seeks a Senior Coastal Engineer to lead the company’s coastal engineering and resilience practice. Who You Are You are a professionally licensed engineer with 15+ years of experience leading coastal engineering projects, including nature‑based solutions, coastal resilience planning, coastal hazards analysis (waves, runup, erosion, flooding) and flood management along the U.S. Pacific Coast. You have led and managed complex coastal engineering projects through concept to construction, producing assessments, reports, design plans, specifications, cost estimates and construction schedules. You are adept at coordinating multidisciplinary teams such as geotechnical, structural, hydraulic engineers, coastal planners and landscape architects. You have provided senior engineer review and oversight on large‑scale projects, with emphasis on Living Shorelines and nature‑based multi‑benefit solutions, and experience integrating engineering with planning, economics, and resilience strategy. You have led, managed, mentored, and supervised multi‑disciplinary design and engineering teams and are an effective communicator fostering teamwork and inclusion. You hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in coastal engineering or a closely related discipline and a Professional Engineers license in California, Washington, and/or Oregon. What You Will Do for ESA Contribute to annual and long‑term strategic planning for ESA’s coastal engineering and resilience practice and develop QA/QC protocols specific to coastal engineering. Identify market opportunities, track clients, and link and leverage resilience/sea‑level‑rise planning with ESA’s coastal sciences and engineering expertise. Leverage ESA’s multidisciplinary practices across regions to grow the team’s capabilities in coastal hazards analysis, resilience planning, and sea‑level‑rise adaptation on a firmwide basis. Collaborate with engineers, planners, hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists, biologists, economists, and other specialists to advance coastal engineering and habitat restoration solutions from concept to implementation. Plan, design and manage projects such as coastal hazard assessments, sea‑level‑rise vulnerability analyses, adaptation planning, Living Shorelines design, ecosystem restoration, fisheries habitat enhancement, and engineering with nature. Manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines within a fast‑paced environment, both independently and as part of a team. Be located in one of ESA’s California regions (Northern or Southern). Compensation: $187,000–$210,000 USD.
