Overview

The Field Service Technician serves as a critical customer-facing technical expert responsible for installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and supporting advanced packaging and robotic systems at customer facilities. This role plays a vital part in ensuring equipment performs to customer expectations while building strong relationships through exceptional service and technical expertise.

Summary

We are seeking an experienced Field Service Technician to provide installation, startup, training, troubleshooting, and technical support for automated packaging and robotic systems. This position is ideal for a hands-on technician with strong mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and PLC experience who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working directly with customers. The successful candidate will be highly independent, technically proficient, and comfortable traveling extensively throughout North America.

Responsibilities
Install, commission, and configure packaging equipment, robotic systems, and integrated automation solutions to meet customer acceptance criteria.
Perform startup and operational testing of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and PLC-controlled systems.
Deliver operator, maintenance, and machine training programs to customer personnel.
Conduct on-site system audits and evaluations to identify root causes of equipment performance issues.
Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, controls, and automation-related problems in the field.
Install machine upgrades, retrofits, enhancements, and replacement components using engineering drawings and specifications.
Test, calibrate, and verify equipment performance to ensure compliance with product specifications and operational requirements.
Identify opportunities for preventative maintenance, equipment improvements, and additional service offerings during customer visits.
Document service activities, findings, recommendations, and corrective actions for customer review and approval.
Complete detailed trip reports and service documentation within 24 hours of leaving customer locations.
Provide remote technical support and proactive customer outreach when not engaged in on-site assignments.
Maintain accurate service records and activity logs within company tracking systems.
Collaborate with engineering, operations, and customer support teams to resolve technical issues and improve equipment performance.
Comply with all customer site safety requirements and company policies while representing the organization professionally.

Qualifications
Technical school degree or equivalent technical training.
Minimum 10 years of experience installing, training, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and PLC-controlled machinery within the packaging industry.
Minimum 5 years of combined experience in fabrication, assembly, mechanical systems, electrical controls, and industrial automation.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in customer-facing environments.
Experience supporting packaging machinery, automated production systems, and robotic equipment.
Ability to read, interpret, and work from 2D and 3D engineering drawings and schematics.
Proficiency reading and understanding PLC logic and making modifications necessary to resolve system functionality issues.
Experience with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and controls systems installation and repair.
Strong customer service skills with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with operators, maintenance teams, and management.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, email platforms, and CRM systems such as Salesforce or similar tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to train operators and maintenance personnel on equipment operation and maintenance.
Ability to travel up to 100% and work at customer sites throughout North America.
Ability to successfully pass fit-for-duty testing initially and annually.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel domestically as required.
