Job Description The Department of Radiology is a 24‑hour, seven day a week operation providing imaging services for adult and pediatric inpatients and outpatients. The MR Radiologic Technologist provides technical knowledge and/or coordinates the delivery of MRI services. Under the direction of a qualified physician, this position will operate a variety of equipment including high field strength magnets and support systems with MRI safety as a priority. The MR Radiologic Technologist will be responsible for patient coordination, acquisition, processing, and archiving of all patient data. The position is responsible for training new staff as well as existing staff on new technologies. The incumbent will maintain and operate equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications, reporting all problems appropriately. The MR Radiologic Technologist is an ARRT licensed technologist who maintains an ARRT sponsored MRI certification and has 1 year of MRI training experience. Incumbent works independently and under general supervision. Responsibilities Presents oneself in a professional manner, with a positive attitude. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform all responsibilities related to producing quality MRI exams, including proper technique, views, positioning, labeling and patient identification. Prepares room, equipment and contrast media as needed to perform various imaging examinations and to assist the Radiologist. Acts in accordance with the department MRI safety policy and guidelines. Screens patients and support staff for contraindications before entering the MRI environment and receives MR safety guidance from the UCSF MRSO. May perform duties at Main hospitals (Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mt Zion), Ambulatory Care Centers and satellite facilities throughout UCSF’s network as required. Maintains competencies in all routine MRI exams: Neuro, MSK, Abdominal, Pediatric, Chest (non‑cardiac). Handles patient interaction, explains the scanning process, positions patients on the table and ensures high quality images. Provides patient comfort, uses appropriate courtesy titles, respects autonomy and dignity, knocks before entering exam rooms, and maintains patient courtesy. Troubleshoots equipment failures, documents and reports issues, and performs QA procedures according to recommended frequency. Schedules, manages and completes exams using the radiology information system. Demonstrates AIDET and Living Pride principles. Communicates with patients and staff effectively; works safely with anesthesia and ancillary staff; participates in timeout procedures. Operates MRI‑compatible monitors and other safe equipment such as infusion pumps, respirators, and A/V devices. Trains and mentors staff, students, residents and faculty. Follows guidelines for MRI contrast administration and uses the power injector competently. Participates in ACR/JCAHO accreditation, annual staff meetings, departmental or hospital committees, and Peer Review processes. Policies and Procedures Uses proper body mechanics for patient and equipment movement. Follows MRI safety guidelines and hospital attendance policies. Maintains current patient safety knowledge: electrical, mechanical, fire, safety, and disaster procedures. Provides excellent customer service using the AIDET acronym. Maintains clean, infection‑control compliant work environment. Adheres to patient identification policy: verifies correct identity with at least two identifiers. Respects diversity and upholds the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Standard of Ethics and the ASRT Magnetic Resonance Practice Standards. Handles phone calls and contacts courteously and maintains patient confidentiality. Ensures MRI protocols are current and efficient. Participates in recruitment, evaluation input and crisis communication as needed. Performs daily quality control scans, assists when volume is low, and helps on IV placement when required. Reviews images with radiologist before dismissal and maintains supplies and linen inventories. Information Management Demonstrates competency in the Radiology Information System, hospital ordering system, and MRI computer systems. Ensures clinical data accuracy, selects correct visit number, and completes all exams in the system. Manages downtime procedures for PACS and RIS systems and uses computers only for business purposes. Development and Performance Improvement Engages in professional growth activities and cross‑training. Attends professional meetings or seminars and keeps current with technology developments. Assists in patient satisfaction and MRI safety improvement projects. Participates in required hospital training and in‑services. Required Qualifications ARRT approved MRI Certification BCLS (CPR) Certification Graduate of a formal radiology technology training program from an AMA‑approved school. Minimum 1 year training experience with a high field magnetic resonance system. Flexibility in scheduling, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and sites. Proficiency in Neuro, MSK, Abdominal, Pediatric and Chest (non‑cardiac) studies. Preferred Qualifications Recent work experience in an acute care setting. CRT Licensure. MRSO certification. Venipuncture Certification.
