POSITION SUMMARY:

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is seeking an Information & Referral Assistant to work with the Department of Workers’ Rights and Labor Legal Services in managing the EMPLEO Hotline. EMPLEO, which stands for Employment, Education and Outreach, is an educational inter-state program aimed at making the Hispanic community aware of their workplace rights. The program officially launched in the Western U.S. in 2004 and continues to expand into other regions of the country. EMPLEO addresses the concerns of recent immigrants who aren’t always familiar with their workplace rights in the U.S. Many immigrants have multifaceted concerns that reach across agency or organizational lines. By using a cooperative approach, the Information & Referral Assistant will direct individuals looking to file a claim with a Labor Agency in the right direction. This candidate will work with the Workers’ Rights Legal Team to document complaints and concerns from workers across a broad range of labor-related issues to then refer them to the appropriate state or federal agency.

The Information and Referral Assistant will also assist the Workers’ Rights Legal Team in identifying California residents who would be best served by referring them to CHIRLA’s Workers’ Rights and Labor Legal Services Department.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Answer hotline phone calls during CHIRLA’s official hours of operation.
• Ensure hotline messages are retrieved and returned in a timely manner.
• Screen callers and document complaints, which may include an array of labor-related issues.
• For non-California residents: Refer individuals to the appropriate labor agency, as instructed by the Director of Workers’ Rights.
• For California residents: Refer individuals to the appropriate labor agency or to the Workers’ Rights Legal Team for a comprehensive screening of issues at the intersection of employment law and immigration law, as instructed by the Director of Workers’ Rights.
• Report daily and weekly tallies on total number of calls and ways in which each was channeled.
• Assist in creating and maintaining reporting spreadsheets and other tools to track deliverables that must be reported by the end of each month.
• Participate in weekly virtual debriefs with the Workers’ Rights Team.
• Participate in training courses as needed.
• Turn in timesheets and other administrative materials according to deadlines assigned.
• Maintain open communication with partners and stakeholders.
• Assist stakeholders in obtaining the information and resources needed to continue promoting the Hotline.
• Other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

• Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to immigrant and worker rights.
• Must have experience in a high paced environment.
• Must be bi-lingual in Spanish, this position interacts heavily with Spanish speaking
• A proactive approach to duties, continually looking at ways to improve administration processes.
• Flexibility to adapt style and method based on what is needed.

Preferred:

• At least one year of experience in administrative processes
• At least one year of customer service experience
• Proficient with Word, Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Forms, and other Microsoft Suite or other software utilized by CHIRLA.
• The ability to manage and develop referral databases is a plus.

• Self-motivated – proven ability to work independently and open to be innovative and creative.
• Ability to plan and prioritize work activities, meet deadlines and follow-up assignments with minimum direction.

JOB TITLE: Information and Referral Assistant

Salary & Benefits: $24.00/hr.
CHIRLA also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt/Hourly, full-time Classification: CHIRLA recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with AFSCME District Council 36. This position is not in CHIRLA’s bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

REPORTS TO: Director of Workers’ Rights and Labor Legal Services
