Unit Secretary, AAU C2-500P 1.0 Evenings Unit Secretary, AAU C2-500P 1.0 Evenings Under the direction and supervision of the Patient Care Manager (or designee) the Unit Secretary (US) functions as a member of the patient care team by providing clerical support. The US duties include, but are not limited to, performing assigned receptionist, clerical, environmental, unit maintenance duties and other duties deemed to assist in the provision of non-clinical care on the nursing unit. Essential Functions The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. They are not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, tasks, and responsibilities. Employees may also perform other duties as assigned. Assist with discharge processes by organizing documents per unit standards. Document patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and off unit procedures, contributing to smooth workflow. Communicate frequently with the care team (e.g., notifying RNs of electronic STAT patient care orders, documenting patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and off unit procedures). Monitor PAL for patients in the unit and inform the RN of any late tasks or new STAT orders. Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment; order and maintain equipment and supplies for the desk area and unit. Maintain and manage medical record according to hospital policy, observing patient confidentiality. Coordinate lab labels organized by patient and maintain the blood board in communication with nursing and phlebotomy. Coordinate the transport of the patient to off unit procedures after consultation with the RN. Print diet and allergy reports every 8 hours and inform RN or charge nurse if information is missing. Perform receptionist duties for the unit, including greeting individuals and handling incoming and outgoing telephone calls. Perform related clerical duties required to maintain departmental operations, including filing, photocopying, typing, faxing, and assigned errands. Practice cost containment; utilize resources efficiently, monitor charges, and recommend changes to improve cost effectiveness. Prioritize effectively, assist with orienting new staff, and complete mandatory training. Respond appropriately in emergency events and communicate with staff to ensure immediate care needs. Respond to customer/staff needs promptly, handle patient call lights and messages, and notify Resource Nurse and others of patient flow. Triage broken and/or soiled equipment to the appropriate department. Use the computerized electronic health record and follow policy on Computers On Wheels (COW) maintenance. Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. High School Diploma/GED required and previous Unit Secretary experience in an acute care/hospital setting highly preferred.
