Histology Supervisor

Job Description Job Details: Histology Supervisor, Nyack, NY 10960 18-month contract Shift: Day/EST – 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. License Required: New York State Clinical Laboratory License (CLIA Certificate) Overall responsibility for planning, coordinating, evaluating, and supervising all technical and/or operational activities and staff in the laboratory. Responsible for operating the lab with the highest quality, safety, and integrity in an efficient and economical manner. Duties and Responsibilities Plan, assign, and direct work in the laboratory. Serve as liaison with other areas as needed. Mentor and support direct reports in their responsibilities and functions. Identify and implement training programs as necessary to ensure they receive training in supervisory skill development. Interact respectfully and build relationships with hospital management. Define, coordinate, and monitor quality assurance programs. Partner with Regional QA Manager and supervise activities of the department Quality Coordinator/Representative to ensure quality control and compliance procedures are followed and QC reports are up to date. Oversee plans and preparations for all inspections, e.g., CAP, NYS, OSHA, EPA and others. Oversee staffing of all personnel in the laboratory to always ensure proper staffing coverage. Under Hospital HR guidance, effectively maintain quality staffing by interviewing, hiring, training, and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling. Mentor and support direct reports. Identify and implement training programs as necessary. Oversee activities of the department, distribute/assign work, determine priorities, and schedule non‑routine procedures. Partner with the Lab Director to identify future needs in terms of staff, equipment, and facilities. Submit appropriate documentation for procurement of such. Perform duties of AP technologist (histology/cytology/grossing/special stains, IHC) as necessitated by absence or peak workload. Perform advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques. Re‑evaluate methodology, make recommended changes and assist in test interpretation. Determine if further testing should be done on samples or if test should be repeated. Assist the Pathologist in gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen section procedures. Assist the Pathologist in hospital surgical cases on the hospital floors as needed. Review test performance, drive process improvements and project management. Prepare and submit required reports to meet established deadlines. Manage test database and ensure departmental standard operating procedures and database accurately reflect the current process and proactively implement new processes as regulatory requirements change. Actively participate on subspecialty committees, corporate committees and business unit committees as needed. In partnership with Lab Director manage department costs and resources to adhere to budget. Provide input with annual budget. Perform and monitor inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used. Place orders for replacements as needed. Resolve problems through interaction with clients via phone calls or other means of communication. Define, coordinate and monitor EHS programs and supervise activities of the Department Safety Coordinator. Ensure EHS regulatory standards and safety procedures are followed. Oversee plans and preparations for inspections. Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition. Adhere to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, JCAHO, and laboratory safety requirements. Required to use personal protective equipment, engineering controls and/or work practice controls as directed by management. Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections. Job Qualifications Required Work Experience: Minimum five (5) years full‑time supervisory experience. New York State Clinical Laboratory License. Five years clinical experience. Physical and Mental Requirements: The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: 1–10 lb frequently; 11–25 lb occasionally; 36–50 lb seldom; over 50 lb without assistance. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses demanding significant manual dexterity. Knowledge: Comprehensive theoretical and operational job knowledge in designated specialty required. Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures. Skills: Proven leadership and problem‑solving skills; detail‑oriented; ability to work independently, establish work priorities, and handle several tasks simultaneously. Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with employees, co‑workers, and clients. Ability to handle client information confidentially. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems. Work Environment: Required to handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals. Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field – REQUIRED. Master’s Degree – Preferred. ASCP Certification – Preferred.
