It serves as both the local and federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute D.C. Code offenses ranging from misdemeanors to homicides. AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute a broad range of U.S. Code violations. The Office is accepting applications for AUSAs in the Superior Court Division. This division is the largest in the Office and is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, handling the highest volume of felony and misdemeanor cases. Types of cases include homicides, sexual assaults, carjackings, kidnappings, robberies, burglaries, domestic violence, and narcotics and weapons possession. AUSAs must possess advocacy and communication skills, superior writing and analytical abilities, the capacity to manage a high-volume docket, and dedication to duty. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, investigative agencies, witnesses, and crime victims. They must also uphold the high ethical standards expected of prosecutors in interactions with opposing counsel and the courts. The AUSA Career Development Program provides new AUSAs with rotational work assignments in different legal program areas to develop skills and competencies over an approximate four-year duration. Responsibilities Prosecute D.C. Code offenses including homicides, sexual assaults, carjackings, kidnappings, robberies, burglaries, domestic violence, narcotics and weapons possession, and U.S. Code violations; manage high-volume docket; collaborate with attorneys, support staff, investigative agencies, witnesses, and crime victims. Conditions of Employment USAO Residency Requirement: Assistant United States Attorneys must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment requires a favorable background investigation. Qualifications Required Qualifications J.D. Degree (or equivalent) and active membership in good standing of the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction. United States Citizen or National. Preferred Qualifications Litigation experience and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Superior communication and advocacy skills; exceptional research, writing, and thorough legal and factual analysis; ability to work well with others; good judgment; functioning with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Base pay ranges from $84,601 to $195,100, including 33.94% locality pay.
