About the Office
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia (USAO-DC) serves as both the local and federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute a broad range of U.S. Code violations in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

The Criminal Division is responsible for investigating and prosecuting criminal cases in the U.S. District Court. It has jurisdiction for a wide range of consequential cases, including violent crime, child exploitation, human trafficking, drug trafficking, fraud, government corruption, cybercrime, terrorism, sanctions violations, espionage, and other threats to D.C. and the nation.

The division has multiple sections, including Asset Forfeiture, Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking (CEHT), Federal Major Crimes (FMC), Fraud, Public Corruption, and Civil Rights (FPCCR), National Security (NS), and Violent Crime and Narcotic Trafficking (VCNT). Responsibilities
Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division perform line and supervisory duties across a broad spectrum of federal criminal prosecutions. Responsibilities include investigating cases, drafting pleadings and search warrants, coordinating with law enforcement, presenting cases before federal grand juries, briefings for defense counsel, handling detention and other courtroom hearings, and prosecuting through trial. Experience and training will increase responsibilities over time.

Conditions of Employment
Security Requirements : Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. The appointment is temporary for up to 14 months, then may be converted to permanent after a favorable background investigation. The permanent appointment includes a two-year probationary period.

Selective Service : Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify registration with the Selective Service System or provide exemption. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with potential SCI access.

USAO Residency Requirement : AUSA must reside in the district or within 25 miles thereof.

Type of Position : All initial attorney appointments to the DOJ are 14-month temporary positions pending favorable adjudication; potential extension or permanent appointment without further competition.

Travel : Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Juris Doctor (or equivalent), active membership in good standing with any U.S. bar, at least one year post-JD legal or relevant experience, and a minimum of three years of post-JD experience. Must be a United States citizen or national.

Preferred Qualifications: Extensive prosecutorial experience, including complex investigations, writing, and multiple jury trials. Judicial clerkship and federal prosecutor experience preferred. A commitment to public service, high moral character, sound judgment, strong work ethic, excellent communication and advocacy skills, exceptional research and writing ability, thorough legal and factual analysis, teamwork, and ability to function with minimal guidance in a demanding environment.

Salary and Benefits
This is an excepted service attorney appointment under an administratively determined pay scale. Pay ranges from AD‑23 to AD‑29, with base pay between $84,601 and $195,100 (including 33.94% locality pay). Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System.
