Associate Biologist On-Call

We are seeking an Associate Biologist On-Call to provide responsive biological support across field, laboratory and operational activities. This role is suited to an early-career biologist who can work flexibly, follow established procedures and respond effectively to changing priorities. You will contribute to the safe and reliable delivery of biological monitoring, sample collection, testing and data recording activities, often working independently while remaining connected to a wider technical team.


Key responsibilities will include carrying out scheduled and urgent field visits; collecting, labelling, transporting and processing biological samples; undertaking routine observations, measurements and basic analyses; maintaining accurate electronic and written records; and preparing clear summaries of findings. You may support ecological surveys, species identification, environmental monitoring, specimen handling, equipment checks and the preparation of materials for laboratory or field use. The role may involve responding to out-of-hours requests, travelling to different locations, working in variable weather conditions and undertaking physically demanding tasks such as walking over uneven ground or carrying equipment. You will be expected to follow health and safety, biosecurity, quality assurance and environmental protection requirements at all times.


Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related subject, together with practical experience gained through study, work or volunteering. Familiarity with biological sampling, fieldwork, laboratory practices, data management or relevant identification techniques would be advantageous. You should have strong attention to detail, good written and verbal communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to prioritise work under pressure. A willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends or short-notice call-outs, is essential. A current driving licence and the ability to travel independently may also be required. Training and support will be provided to help you develop your technical capability and confidence in the role.
