Senior Biologist On-Call

We are seeking an experienced Senior Biologist On-Call to provide expert biological support across a range of operational, technical and field-based activities. This role will suit a highly capable professional who can respond effectively to changing priorities, assess biological risks and provide sound, evidence-based advice in time-sensitive situations. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders and specialist contractors to support the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of environmental and biological programmes.


Key responsibilities will include coordinating and undertaking biological surveys, inspections, monitoring and assessments; reviewing technical data and preparing clear reports, recommendations and regulatory documentation; and providing specialist advice on matters such as protected species, habitats, biosecurity, ecological risk and mitigation. You will be expected to remain available for on-call duties, responding promptly to incidents, urgent requests and operational issues outside standard working hours when required. The role will also involve mentoring less experienced biologists, reviewing work for technical quality, contributing to procedures and risk assessments, and helping to improve field methods, data management and reporting standards.


Applicants should hold a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related discipline, together with substantial practical experience in a biological or environmental role. Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance and industry good practice is essential, as is the ability to interpret technical information and communicate it clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. Experience of leading fieldwork, managing competing priorities and making sound decisions during high-pressure situations is highly desirable. You will need excellent organisational and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a flexible approach to working hours and locations. A full driving licence, willingness to travel and the ability to work safely in challenging field conditions may also be required.
