Job Overview Elevator Inspector (S) in the Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau, Department of Labor, Division Standards, Inspections. This role inspects elevators, escalators, and amusement devices, analyzes their conditions and capabilities, and reports violations under the Elevator Safety Act, Amusement Device Safety Act, and applicable standards and codes. Location & Availability Applicants must reside in Dare County or surrounding counties, or be willing to relocate within 30 days of hire. This is a field‑based teleworker position. Salary Recruitment Range: $55,221.00 – $72,100.00 (Not QEI Certified) or $55,221.00 – $79,310.00 (QEI Certified). Responsibilities Inspect and analyze the condition and capabilities of elevators, escalators, and related equipment. Identify and report violations pursuant to the Elevator Safety Act, Amusement Device Safety Act, and relevant codes and standards. Conduct inspections in varied environments, including outdoor and indoor sites with extreme weather conditions. Qualifications Demonstrated ability to inspect equipment with intricate and complex systems accurately and precisely. Working knowledge of the construction and operation of elevators, escalators, and related equipment. Knowledge of all applicable state and national safety codes for elevators, escalators, and amusement devices. Understanding of electrical and hydraulic systems. Basic computer and word‑processing skills. Valid driver's license. Must obtain ASME QEl‑1 Qualified or Certified Elevator Inspector certification within one year of employment. Physical Requirements Move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Walk long distances on uneven surfaces indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions. Stand, lift, crawl, stoop, and perform other physically demanding tasks. Work in extreme heat, humidity, cold, and rainy weather, as well as high indoor temperatures. Operate in restricted spaces with limited occupancy capacity, such as elevator pits. Ascend and descend ladders or steps on a device. Maintain 50‑100% daily activity levels in non‑stationary positions. Perform tasks in a potentially noisy environment. Certification All Elevator Inspectors are required to be certified as a Qualified or Certified Elevator Inspector according to ASME QEl‑1, accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Candidates without certification will receive study time and two examination opportunities, with both exam fees paid by the agency. Failure to pass the QEI examination after two attempts results in separation.
