The Department is organized into three primary divisions which carry out the Department's principle regulatory, enforcement and promotional programs, and the administrative operations. The three primary divisions have divisions, bureaus and offices under each, which carry out the specific and specialized portions of the NCDOL mission. To learn more about the NC Department of Labor, please visit our website at of Work**To execute the responsibilities of the Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau by inspecting and analyzing the condition and capabilities and reporting violations on various devices covered by the Elevator Safety Act, Amusement Device Safety Act and the standards and codes adopted under their authority.**Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences****This position will close at 11:59 pm the night before the end date.**Recruitment Range: $55,221.00 - $72,100.00 (Not QEI Certified)Recruitment Range: $55,221.00 - $79,310.00 (QEI Certified)Applicants must reside in Dare County or surrounding counties or relocate within 30 days of the hire date.\*This position is a field-based teleworker.* Demonstrated ability to accurately and precisely inspect equipment with intricate and complex systems.* Demonstrated working knowledge of the construction and operation of elevators, escalators and related equipment.* Demonstrated working knowledge of all applicable state and national safety codes for elevators, escalators and related equipment as well as amusement devices.* Demonstrated working knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems.* The inspector must have the ability to be trained in using basic computer programs and simple word processing skills.* The job description contains an ADA checklist of physical requirements. This is not a comprehensive list. Successful candidate must be able to fulfil all physical requirements of this position as listed on the ADA checklist with or without reasonable accommodation.* Ability to maintain an extremely high level of visual attention and mental concentration while conducting an inspection.* Ability to work in extreme weather conditions outdoors such as high heat and humidity, cold and rainy weather, as well as high indoor temperatures in enclosed spaces.* Ability to move objects weighing 50 lbs.* Ability to walk long distances on uneven surfaces indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions.* Ability to work in restricted spaces with limited capacity that are not designed for continuous occupancy, e.g. an elevator pit.* Ability to ascend/descend a ladder or steps on a device.* Ability to work in an environment that may require 50-100% daily activity levels (non-stationary positions).* Ability to position self to inspect equipment to include bending, crawling, stooping, standing, lifting, and walking.* Must be able to complete tasks in a potentially noisy environment.All NC Department of Labor Elevator Inspectors are required to be certified as a Qualified or Certified Elevator Inspector (in accordance with ASME QEl-1) from an organization granted accreditation under ISO/IEC 17024 by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) prior to conducting independent elevator inspections. The QEI certification requires a rigorous background check and examination process, and the inspector must continue to maintain these qualifications based on the ASME QEI-1 Standard for Qualified Elevator Inspectors. If a candidate does not already have this certification when applying for a position with NCDOL, once hired, they will be given study time and two opportunities to take the QEI examination. NCDOL will pay for two examination fees. If an employee does not pass the QEI exam after two attempts, the employee will be separated from the agency. A candidate must read and sign an acknowledgement of this requirement during the interview process.
