Human Resource Generalist
VersAbility Resources
Job description About VersAbility Resources
VersAbility Resources is a nonprofit based in Hampton, Virginia, supporting people with disabilities through employment services, day programs, residential community living, and government contract operations. We partner with families, employers, and community organizations to help people live, work, and thrive. Role Overview
VersAbility Resources is seeking an experienced and collaborative Human Resources Generalist to serve as the primary Human Resources partner for our West Coast Government Contract operations out of our Hampton office. This is an excellent opportunity for an HR professional who enjoys building relationships, solving employee issues, and partnering with leaders to create a positive employee experience. In this role, you'll support the full employee lifecycle-from recruitment and onboarding to employee relations, compliance, HRIS administration, reporting, benefits, and performance management-while ensuring Human Resources practices remain consistent, compliant, and employee-focused across multiple locations. The Human Resources Generalist serves as the primary HR liaison for our San Diego Ship Provisioning, Hawaii Ship Provisioning, and New Mexico Government Contract operations, while also supporting future West Coast contracts as the organization grows. Candidates with experience supporting California employees, multi-state operations, or compliance-driven environments are strongly encouraged to apply. What You'll Do
• Serve as the primary Human Resources contact for assigned West Coast Government Contract employees and managers.
• Coordinate employee status changes, including hires, transfers, promotions, compensation changes, leaves of absence, and separations.
• Support recruitment activities by coordinating interviews, candidate communications, onboarding, and pre-employment requirements.
• Assist hiring managers with legally compliant interview and selection documentation.
• Partner with managers on employee relations matters, investigations, corrective actions, and performance management.
• Coordinate disability-related employment documentation in partnership with the Quality & Compliance team.
• Maintain accurate personnel files, confidential documentation, and HRIS records within Paychex.
• Generate HR reports, compliance reports, employee tracking logs, and departmental metrics.
• Coordinate employee training, recertifications, onboarding, and compliance-related activities.
• Support benefits administration, open enrollment, and employee inquiries in partnership with Payroll and Benefits.
• Travel periodically to organizational and contract locations to provide onsite Human Resources support.
• Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Three to five years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience, preferably in a Human Resources Generalist, HR Coordinator, or HR Administrator role.
• Experience supporting multi-site operations, government contracts, or compliance-driven organizations preferred.
• Experience supporting California-based employees and working knowledge of California employment laws, wage and hour requirements, leave administration, and employee relations strongly preferred.
• Experience working with an HRIS, preferably Paychex.
• Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• PHR, SHRM-CP, or other Human Resources certification preferred. Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position operates under a hybrid work schedule, combining in-office and remote work based out of Hampton, Virginia. The Human Resources Generalist regularly collaborates with employees, managers, applicants, government contract personnel, and external partners while supporting multiple locations across the country.
Occasional travel to organizational offices, government contract sites, hiring events, employee meetings, training sessions, and investigations may be required. Due to the geographic regions supported by this role, occasional work outside traditional Eastern Time business hours may be necessary to support employees and operations located in the Pacific and Hawaii-Aleutian time zones.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position. Schedule
This position operates on a hybrid work schedule. Employees are expected to work in the Hampton office approximately three days per week.
While working onsite, the typical schedule is 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Because this role supports employees across multiple time zones, candidates must be flexible and occasionally available to adjust their work schedule to meet operational needs for employees in the Pacific and Hawaii-Aleutian time zones. Why Join Us
• Support employees and leaders across multiple states and government contract operations.
• Expand your Human Resources expertise in employee relations, compliance, HRIS administration, benefits, onboarding, and performance management.
• Join a collaborative HR team committed to operational excellence and continuous improvement.
• Enjoy a hybrid work environment with opportunities for professional growth and career development. How to Apply
Apply online through VersAbility Resources' careers site. Qualified applicants will be contacted by a member of our Talent Acquisition team.
