Next City seeks a full-time Development Manager responsible for all administrative aspects of fundraising. This role will also support the organization and management of Next City’s day-to-day efforts to attract and retain individual small donors as we improve our membership program.

We are a nonprofit journalism organization. The work of the Development Manager directly ensures Next City has the resources needed to achieve our mission of amplifying marginalized voices, spreading solutions, and ultimately liberating cities from systems and cultures of oppression.

Responsibilities will include:

• Manage the overall process associated with grant seeking.
• Research funders to identify key contacts and priorities.
• Conduct initial and ongoing outreach to funders and partners.
• Assist the team in scheduling and executing meetings with partners and key contacts.
• Write and submit letters of interest and proposals.
• Responsible for grants management, including performance reporting, budget reconciliation, and grant compliance. Ensure timely and accurate delivery of all reporting to funders.
• Participate in regular meetings and updates with the Executive Director and Board.
• Envision and produce year-end appeal letters and other campaigns targeting donors.
• Process donations and prepare acknowledgment letters and other correspondence.

The Development Manager manages multiple deadlines and ensures Next City delivers on its promises to the many partners and collaborators who support our nonprofit organization. This position reports to Next City’s Executive Director. While no single candidate may embody all the qualifications below, an ideal candidate would possess many of the following experiences and skill sets:

• Experience in fundraising, partner, or sponsorship management.
• Excellent proposal writing skills.
• Experience completing online grant applications.
• Demonstrated project management and organizational skills, especially a strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and follow through.
• Strong ability to follow systems and procedures.
• Strong communication skills with partners, funders, donors, board members, and members of the greater community; must be extremely professional and able to resolve all minor conflicts.
• Experience with database software and database management.
• A commitment to the mission and vision of Next City.
• Previous experience working in a nonprofit organization preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge or passion for subject areas relevant to coverage of cities, including but not limited to racial justice, affordable housing, equitable economic development, environmental justice, and more.

The person in this position is part of a small but high-performing team. Some travel will be required. This is a full-time position operating remotely in the United States, primarily during East Coast hours.
