Police Officer Job Classification: Pay grade level: Grade 12B. Compensation: $50,908 - $69,997. Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience. Employee category: Staff. Department: College Police. Reports to: Chief of College Police. FLSA status: Non-Exempt. Job Code: FF025FTNOFF. Location: Primarily Main Campus, but may be assigned to any college location as directed. Summary College Police provides safety and security related services to all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Major duties include patrolling College grounds by foot, bicycle, or vehicle; responding to calls for assistance; locking and unlocking facilities; monitoring security cameras; identifying violations; providing security services for events; directing traffic; issuing traffic citations; and maintaining records, logs, and documentation of activities and incidents. Position Description Detect and process traffic and parking violations according to college regulations. Enforce all federal laws, state statutes, local ordinances and College regulations concerning the safety of college personnel and community members. Provide general patrol of college grounds and buildings by vehicle or on foot. Write reports on criminal offenses and other incidents. Conduct follow‑up investigations of crimes and incidents. Perform under stressful conditions. Attend classes, training sessions, and workshops to maintain current knowledge of law enforcement. Keep current on changes in area of responsibility. Be able to work all shifts and available to cover extra shifts due to sickness, vacations, special events, etc. Submit daily activity log to the Chief of College Police. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of College Police. This position description represents key areas of responsibility; specific assignments will vary with operational needs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of Kansas criminal and traffic statutes. Thorough knowledge of College and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of campus buildings and grounds. Operational knowledge of report writing, computer‑aided dispatch, fire, camera, and door access computer systems used by College Police. Observational skills to detect crimes and apprehend offenders and physical fitness necessary to effect arrests safely. Knowledge of first‑responder procedures for criminal activity and natural disasters including fires, tornadoes, and other threats. Ability to obtain state certification within one year of appointment. Pass a Field Training Program that may last up to 12 weeks. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding law‑enforcement and college information. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent with one year of experience or training in a security‑related area or a combination of education and tested experience. Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle. Preferred Qualifications Attendance at law‑enforcement conferences, workshops, or seminars. Associate or bachelor’s degree in law enforcement or related discipline. Current state law‑enforcement commissioned officers. Evidence of specialized training such as firearms, crime scene, self‑defense, etc. Experience working in an educational institution. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products. Working Conditions Frequent standing, talking, hearing, walking, and sitting. May occasionally push or lift items. Physical ability to arrest individuals, stamina for 10‑hour shifts with occasional overtime. Occasional overnight shifts and working weekends. Work Schedule Work at various Kansas City, Kansas Community College locations, with shifts including morning, evening, overnight, and weekends. Schedule subject to change to meet operational needs.
