Are you looking for Winter Season employment in the Lake Tahoe area? Do you have a California Class B or better COMMERCIAL Drivers License or a Nevada COMMERCIAL Drivers License and a clean DMV record? Are you dependable and able to work a variety of shifts? The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for a team of seasonal snow removal equipment operators to keep South Lake Tahoe's streets safe and clear during this winter season. The season begins November 2, 2026 and works through May 3, 2027. Operators work a standard 8-hour shift Monday - Friday from 7 am - 3 pm when no snow is forecasted. On days when snow is expected, the team is split into two 12-hour shifts from 6 am - 6 pm and 6 pm - 6 am. Night shift team members receive a 4% differential for the entire season. In addition, team members are expected to be On-Call for weekend and holiday removal work when snow is expected. Team members receive On-Call pay for days when they are expected to be available for work on short notice. Employees in this classification MUST be available to work a varied work schedule, including weekends and holidays. Operators with Commercial DL will earn $40.29 per hour, plus overtime pay for work over 40 hours per week ($60.44 per hour) and twice the hourly rate ($80.59) for work during holidays. In addition, for any On-Call Duty (to be ready to report to work), the employee can earn $13.29 per hour.

Under supervision of assigned supervisory or management staff, the snow removal equipment operator performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work in the removal of snow from city streets and city parking lots, and maintenance of other public services areas. Team members are expected to be experienced and able to do the full range of tasks assigned. Employees in this classification receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. Class and salary step placement, including placement of new hires, are based on the level of demonstrated education, experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities related to requirements of the City of South Lake Tahoe classification of Senior Snow Removal Operator-Temporary, general work requirements of City of South Lake Tahoe Community Services/Public Works-Snow Removal, and work requirements of the City of South Lake Tahoe organization and its community. The Senior Snow Removal Operator-Temporary classification is a Temporary/Seasonal classification, and employees in this classification are at will and not eligible for regular employee benefits.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Operates heavy construction equipment such as backhoes, motor graders, large front-end loaders, snow blowers, for a variety of public works operations involving street, snow removal drainage systems, sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
• Operates a variety of heavy equipment in the removal of snow from City streets and parking lots.
• Works as part of a public services crew; shovels and spreads asphalt and asphalt base in patching, repairing and reconstruction of streets.
• Grades roadway shoulder, unimproved parking areas, large areas for patching with a variety of heavy equipment.
• Uses concrete cutting and breaking equipment; operates a jackhammer; pours and assists in finishing concrete and masonry work; constructs concrete forms and performs rough carpentry work.
• Operates a street sweeper along an assigned City route, cleaning City parking lots, streets, and gutters.
• Loads and transports heavy construction equipment to and from the work site using a large truck and trailer.
• Operates light construction equipment and power tools such as compressors, jack hammers, compactors, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws, and drainage rodders.
• Performs minor repairs on equipment, and reports the need for major repairs; checks and adjusts fluid level; replaces brooms on sweepers; greases and lubricates moving parts as required.
• Installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
• Performs street paving, patching, overlaying, and pot hole and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
• Works unusual and prolonged work schedules; may work extended work shifts during snow removal activities; regular work days may include weekends and holidays; employee may be assigned to after hours and weekend call-out.
• Provides general job related information to the public as directed by the Community Services Department.
• Maintains and repairs service equipment; maintains tools and equipment in working order.
• Maintains inventory and orders supplies and equipment related to assigned task.
• May perform a variety of general manual labor duties.
• Assists in a variety of building maintenance duties.
• Performs related duties as required.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. Knowledge of: Common tools and materials used in street maintenance. Snow removal procedures and practices. City street system repair and maintenance techniques. Operation and maintenance requirements of trucks and heavy power-driven equipment. Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations. Safe work practices and policies. Ability to: Perform journey level skilled and semi-skilled street snow removal and maintenance duties. Know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules. Identify potential safety hazards. Interpret work orders; remember supervisor's instructions; and explain jobs to other employees. Perform heavy manual labor. Work with the variety of tools related to public service maintenance. Operate a variety of motorized maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner. Operate specialized job-related equipment including hydraulic jackhammers, chain saws, tampers. Work independently or in a crew situation, as assigned. Read and understand schematic diagrams. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Experience Guidelines: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education/Training - Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Experience - Twelve eighteen months of responsible snow removal, street maintenance, and construction experience. License or Certificate - Possession of a valid Class B California or Nevada driver's license, as required of current openings with an insurable DMV record.

Due to the physical nature of this position, the majority of tasks performed by incumbents involve a combination of two or more simultaneous physical operations requiring but not limited to the following: CONTINUOUS: sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, fingering, and hearing; lifting and carrying of tools and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs.; pushing/pulling of tools and equipment up to 25 lbs. FREQUENT: balancing, crouching and talking; pushing/pulling of tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. OCCASIONAL: crawling, smelling; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling of tools and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.; lifting and carrying tools and equipment weighing over 100 lbs. with assistance. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to see work orders and service requests, field conditions, equipment dials and gauges; operate vehicles and equipment; monitor telephone traffic conditions and mix chemicals. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction; ability to monitor sounds for traffic control and equipment malfunction; hear back-up alarms on trucks and other equipment, telephone and radio transmissions, and calls for assistance from others.
