Today, BCFM is a growing nonprofit organization with a broader vision: building athriving local food system that supports regional agriculture, strengthens communityconnection, and expands access to local food. The Director of Operations will join at a pivotalmoment — helping transform a successful, entrepreneurial organization into a sustainable, resilient institution prepared for its next four decades. Position Description You will thrive at BCFM if you: Are energized by building something, not just maintaining something. Enjoy creating order from complexity and improving systems over time. Can move comfortably between strategic conversations and hands-on financial work. Appreciate the creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness required in a growing nonprofit. Want your work to directly contribute to stronger local food systems and community resilience. Core Responsibilities This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who is grounded in strong accounting principles and enjoys building systems, improving processes, and translating financial information into practical insights for our nonprofit team and board. The ideal candidate will bring strong nonprofit financial expertise while embracing the reality of a lean, entrepreneurial organization where leaders create solutions, not just manage existing structures. Financial Strategy & Leadership Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and leadership team, providing financial insight that informs organizational priorities, program investments, and long-term planning. Develop and maintain financial models that support BCFM’s evolving programs, including farmers markets, Food Hub operations, food access initiatives, fundraising growth, and future capital projects. Lead annual budgeting, monitoring, forecasting, financial planning, and scenario analysis. Provide thoughtful analysis of revenue streams, program sustainability, cost structures, and opportunities for growth. Support strategic decision-making with clear, accessible financial information. Support vendors and key stakeholders with best-in-class customer service to achieve mission goals. Accounting Operations & Financial Systems Oversee all accounting functions, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting. Partner with bookkeeping and accounting team members and contractors to maintain strong day-to-day financial operations. Strengthen accounting workflows, internal controls, reconciliations, and documentation. Support grant management and fundraising efforts. Evaluate and improve financial systems, tools, and processes as BCFM grows. Establish scalable practices that reduce organizational dependency on individual knowledge holders. Reporting, Compliance & Accountability Prepare monthly financial reports for leadership and the Board Finance Committee, translating financial results into meaningful insights. Manage annual audit preparation, tax filings, grant applications and reporting, and regulatory compliance. Ensure strong financial stewardship of restricted funds, grants, sponsorships, and philanthropic investments. Partner with program leaders to improve budget ownership and financial decision-making across the organization. Organizational Systems & Cross-Functional Partnership Collaborate closely with the Director of Operations and Executive Director to build the internal infrastructure required for organizational growth. Support improved systems for contracts, purchasing, vendor management, and operational planning. Help create a culture where financial information is accessible, understood, and used throughout the organization. Build strong relationships across teams, helping staff connect their work to organizational sustainability. Future Growth & Capital Readiness Support BCFM’s long-term financial planning for major initiatives, including the development of a year-round market/community hub. Develop financial frameworks for capital planning, fundraising investments, earned revenue opportunities, and facility operations. Build the financial systems needed to support increased complexity while preserving BCFM’s entrepreneurial culture. First-Year Priorities Maintain Financial Visibility & Confidence: Continue to build a stronger foundation of financial clarity so leaders and the Board have timely, useful information to guide decisions. Maintain consistent monthly financial reporting, forecasting processes, budget-to-actual reporting by department and program area. Create accessible dashboards and financial tools for leadership decision-making. Build a shared understanding of BCFM’s financial position, opportunities, and challenges. Success measures: Leadership and Board members have timely, understandable financial information which supports strategic decisions, budget owners understand their financial responsibilities. Strengthen Core Financial Systems & Processes: Continue to evolve BCFM toward durable organizational infrastructure. Review and optimize systems, workflows, and responsibilities to strengthen reconciliation, close processes, and reporting timelines. Update and fine tune roles between internal staff, bookkeeping support, contractors, and external partners to continue transition toward nonprofit finance & accounting excellence. Reduce manual processes and create repeatable systems. Success measures: Core financial processes are documented, consistent, and less dependent on individual knowledge. Month-end close and reporting processes are predictable and efficient and internal controls and compliance practices are strengthened. Partner with Leadership to Build the Next Phase of BCFM: Help the organization make strategic choices as programs, revenue streams, and partnerships expand. Partner with the Executive Director and Director of Operations on organizational planning. Develop financial models for major initiatives and growth scenarios. Support program leaders in understanding financial drivers. Improve decision-making around staffing, investments, and resource allocation. Success measures: The Director of Finance is viewed as a trusted advisor across the organization. Leadership uses financial analysis to evaluate opportunities and tradeoffs and program teams better understand the financial implications of their work. Prepare BCFM for Increased Scale & Complexity: Ensure the organization is ready for the opportunities ahead, including fundraising growth and a future year-round market. Build financial projections and frameworks for capital planning. Strengthen grant and restricted fund management. Support fundraising strategy with accurate financial information. Develop long-range financial models for sustainability. Success measures: BCFM has financial models supporting future investments, fundraising, and capital planning.
