Custodian

The custodian keeps the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator, and if applicable, the head custodian. The individual will have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and the general public. They will interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, other maintenance staff, and business contacts from outside the county. They will pass the written and performance tests that are directly related to the position. They will establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community. They will perform duties in full compliance with all county requirements and the Board of Education Policies. They will read and comply with labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials. They will perform strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties. They will work under minimal or no supervision and be flexible; be an effective self-starter. They will complete necessary training and in-service as required by the county. They will solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists consistent with the duties of this position. They will interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. They will maintain regular attendance. They will clean classrooms, offices, libraries, restrooms, and common areas including but not limited to chalkboards, dusting, emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming and washing windows. They will scrub, mop, disinfect, and polish hard-surfaced floors in restroom, cafeteria, hallways, classrooms, etc. as required including regular waxing. They will disinfect all water fountains, floors in the restroom, commodes, urinals, and sinks every day. They will maintain an inventory and requisition of janitorial supplies and equipment and inform the head custodian of needs in advance so as not to hinder the continued performance of the building custodial duties. They will move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal. They will immediately report any vandalism of school property to his/her supervisor. They will disinfect areas of high "touch" access on a daily basis during the flu season to help prevent spread of the flu. They will receive PRIOR permission from building principal and Superintendent to work in excess of 40 hours per week (Overtime Authorization Form signed by Superintendent or designee). They will correct minor safety hazards when observed and/or immediately refer safety hazards to the building supervisor. They will use equipment in an appropriate manner: clean equipment after regular use and report any issues to supervisor or head custodian. They will maintain confidentiality. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
