WA-Pharmacy Operations Manager - Inpatient RENTON, WA Qualifications Bachelor's (Required) pharmacy supervisory/management: 3 years (Required) ASHP Accredited Residency and/or Fellowship (Required) Qualifications Bachelor's (Required) pharmacy supervisory/management: 3 years (Required) WA State Pharmacist license (Required) ASHP Accredited Residency and/or Fellowship (Required) Benefits Dental insurance Health insurance Paid time off Full Job Description JOB OVERVIEW: Responsible for managerial oversight related to pharmacy operations, programs, services, associated personnel, and will take on advanced responsibilities in the areas of pharmacy operations, technology and automation, medication safety, quality improvement, compliance, technician oversight and training, medication compounding and preparation, and education related to all aspects of pharmacy operations. AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Hospital Pharmacy Department HOURS OF WORK: Variable to accommodate Pharmacy needs RESPONSIBLE TO: Director/VP Pharmacy Services

PREREQUISITES:

  1. Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS/PharmD degree required
  2. Licensed in the State of Washington as a Pharmacist, or eligible for licensure.
  3. Completion of an ASHP Accredited Residency and/or Fellowship preferred.
  4. Minimum of 2-3 years pharmacy supervisory/management experience.
  5. Demonstrated leadership, competency, and skill resulting in high functioning teams.
  6. Demonstrated experience in the following areas: unit dose, sterile and non-sterile compounding, IV admixture, continuous quality improvement, legal/regulatory compliance, drug use evaluation and drug information.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Conforms to the minimum requirements for hospital pharmacists as outlined in the Hospital Pharmacy Standards published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
  2. Demonstrated ability to guide and implement programs in keeping with Valley Medical Center's Administrative and
Pharmacy Department goals. 3. Possess skills in process improvement and change management through knowledge of the operational and technical skills needed to meet high-quality outcomes. 4. Demonstrated skill in developing and maintaining positive and effective interpersonal relationships, including, but not limited to, team leadership, conflict resolution, listening skills, and the flexibility to meet the changing needs of the system. 5. Participates in and supports professional organizations and hospital affiliated organizations. 6. Demonstrated ability regarding positive interactions and communication skills with patients, their families and health care professionals. 7. Demonstrated competency deploying technology and innovative programs to support patient care and safety. TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS. ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  3. Requires the maintaining of a knowledge base of current medications, drug therapies and distribution services.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hospital Pharmacy Operations and Medication-Use Systems:
  1. Ensure pharmacists are positioned to improve the quality and safety of medication use throughout the organization through involvement in all medication improvement activities and by insuring pharmacy services meet patient care needs while providing safe, effective, and economical drug therapies.
  2. Responsible for operational systems to assure appropriate prescribing, distribution, administration, and monitoring outcomes of drug therapy process.
  3. Manage technology and automation to allow for optimum resources and evaluate new automation/technology that brings additional value to the organization.
  4. Assure that existing automation is being utilized at the highest level of efficiency and develop efficiency standards for each.
  5. Assure compliance with sterile compounding (USP 797/800) and non-sterile compounding practices (USP 795).
  6. Understands and reacts effectively to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients.
  7. Review reports for medication errors, adverse drug events, ineffective service, or other problem identification.
Analyze and implement quality improvement measures for improving organizational performance. 8. Manage peri-operative care pharmacy services including medication management workflows in these areas. Coordinate programs to support efficient and cost-effective use of medications within the OR. 9. Assist and coordinate efforts to ensure operations meet compliance and quality improvement standards and initiatives. 10. Identify opportunities to redesign operational systems to maximize labor and operational efficiency. 11. Planning and project management for specific projects and new services related to departmental goals. 12. Assure proper training for end users. 13. Coordinate and monitor pharmacy internal and external workload and productivity monitoring systems. 14. Conduct post-implementation assessment of pharmacy automation enhancements and new pharmacy programs to ensure desired changes are achieved. Change systems to achieve desired results. 15. Prepare work plans, identifying steps involved, resources required and parties who should be involved both within and outside the department. 16. In collaboration with Pharmacy Managers and Technician Supervisors assist in oversight of day to day operations while identifying and resolving problems which occur. 17. Develop and/or maintain patient care services and operational policies and procedures. Planning and Project Leadership
  1. Participate in department’s strategic plan development and execution of assigned goals.
  2. Identify and develop business cases for pharmacy patient care services based upon anticipated future needs, practice advancement, and organizational priorities for inclusion in the department strategic plan.
  3. Mentor and develop residents and pharmacists in planning/project management as members of the project team via direction, supporting, coaching, and delegating as appropriate.
  4. Participate and/or lead, as pharmacy representative, organization quality improvement initiatives/projects.
  5. Maintain an expertise in the selection and use quality improvement methodologies/tools to maximize project outcomes.
  6. Provide leadership and oversight to resident major projects.
  7. Develop and maintain an expertise in change management tools and theories
  8. Lead development of resources to assist pharmacists with strategies to advance innovative research, education and project ideas.
Practice Advancement and Optimization
  1. Advance Valley Medical Center’s comprehensive pharmacy practice model and define the roles/practice standards of pharmacists, technicians, residents, and students.
  2. Monitor staff performance and recognize high-performers and hold poor performers accountable to department and institutional standards.
  3. Actively participate in the ongoing professional development of individual pharmacists via education, mentorship, and competency development.
  4. Develop, lead, implement and manage advanced inpatient pharmacy patient care services and practice standards.
  5. Actively participate in pharmacy student clerkships, pharmacy internships, and post-graduate residency training programs.
  6. Lead and develop pharmacists to be eligible for and attain available professional certifications and recognition of knowledge, skills and abilities.
  7. Actively participate in professional pharmacy organizations (e.g. Washington State Pharmacy Association,
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American College of Clinical Pharmacy). 8. Participate as a member of pharmacy department and hospital multidisciplinary team and committees. Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Activities:
  1. Assists in identifying and developing action plans for areas of pharmaceutical care needing continuous quality improvement.
  2. Works with QA pharmacist to coordinate staff education, implementation of C.Q.I. action plans, QA data collection/review/interpretation and QA reporting.
  3. Represents the Department of Pharmaceutical Services on the Quality Management Committee, participates on other appropriate committees and interacts with VMC departments and medical staff as appropriate.
  4. Works with the QA pharmacist to conduct follow-up reviews and assessment of data collected from medical center medication incident reporting system.
  5. Works with QA pharmacist and Clinical Coordinator to develop policies and procedures for C.Q.I. activities including D.U.E. and A.D.R. activities.
  6. Completes additional responsibilities/projects, including clinical responsibilities, when assigned by the Director of
Pharmacy 7. Coordinates Joint Commission, DOH and DEA activities to insure legal/regulatory compliance. General Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and implement organization pharmacy operational planning and decision-making processes in conjunction with pharmacy managers/supervisors and in collaboration with administrative leadership by identifying opportunities to improve medication use, provide direction on the use of pharmaceuticals, and promote the appropriate use of related technology.
  2. Collaborate with VMC’s Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee to develop drug-utilization and formulary initiatives that optimize therapeutic outcomes and ensure the use of cost-effective pharmacotherapy. Identifies inappropriate utilization and leads efforts to modify practices to improve medication use.
  3. Actively participate in maintaining compliance with all aspects of the organization’s 340B pharmacy program.
  4. Promotes staff and unit emergency response preparedness.
  5. Promotes general safety and protects patients/family/visitors and co-workers.
  6. Assures that proper charging documentation is completed correctly for services provided.
  7. Promote and market Valley Medical Center and the pharmacy department to the community, patients, hospital employees, members of the medical staff and their office employees in an informational manner.
  8. Maintain a positive, direct, open communication line with members of the VMC Medical Staff and their employees.
  9. Assumes the role of maintaining the pharmacy’s policies and procedures to accurately reflect the dispensing and clinical processes and meet legal and regulatory requirements.
  10. Oversight of hospital drug distribution system including, but not limited to, patient safety, legal/regulatory compliance, inventory management, medication handling accountabilities, Co-chair of VMC Pyxis Committee and any other system-related accountabilities.
  11. General knowledge of clinical and distribution work flow processes of pharmacist and technical support staff.
  12. Maintain a positive, direct, open communication line with members of the VMC Medical Staff and their employees.
  13. Completes additional responsibilities/projects when assigned by the Director of Pharmacy.
