Acute Care Pharmacy Manager
Job Summary: In addition to the responsibilities listed below, this position is also responsible for facilitating conversations with other Acute Care Leaders to implement pharmacy strategic priorities and goals across all inpatient pharmacy practice settings. Partnering with national, regional, and local pharmacy leadership to provide direction and oversight to maintain and improve inpatient operational performance across the enterprise. Ensuring multiple teams align to quality of pharmaceutical care and services across practice settings, with focus on inpatient pharmacy, and assure regulatory and corporate compliance. Presenting and overseeing the development and implementation of processes to assure the quality of pharmaceutical care and services across practice settings, with focus on inpatient pharmacy, and to assure regulatory and corporate compliance. Establishing relationships with senior pharmacy leadership, Acute Care, and Infusion to evaluate consistent deployment of processes and tools to measure and ensure the quality of pharmaceutical care, operations, and service. Independently providing innovative consultative feedback and recommendations to drug use management leadership to ensure appropriate use of pharmaceuticals, consistent implementations of drug use initiatives, and manage care management initiatives. Overseeing the development of acute care pharmacy supervisory personnel in planning, developing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising services and functions provided by each pharmacy in area of responsibility including legal and regulatory requirements. Establishing relationships with medical center leaders and staff (e.g., lab, nursing, physician partners/providers) to provide pharmaceutical consultative advice, oversight, and monitor execution of practices. Providing strategic implementation oversight during staff meetings, clinical practice meetings, and staff huddles to ensure alignment across teams. Approving revisions and updates to compounding master formulas, formulary dispensing records, and templates in Pharmacy dispensing programs. Leveraging data regarding drug availability and supply to escalate issues enterprise-wide and influence strategic inventory management priorities.
Our Ideal Applicant:
- Pharmacist License (Washington) required at hire, therefore must be willing to obtain license if they don't already have one for WA. National Provider Identifier (NPI#)
- Experience in inpatient pharmacy operations, in an acute hospital setting.
- Experience in directly managing pharmacy staff.
- Working in a multi-disciplinary work environment including hospital and physician staff.
- Experience with developing, implementing and updating clinical workflows.
- Candidate will have leadership experience in a 24/7/365 hospital setting, which includes managing various levels of direct reports (Pharmacists, Interns, Pharmacy Technicians, etc.).
- Prior experience of developing, implementing and maintaining clinical workflows in collaboration with hospital and physician leadership.
- Doctorate of Pharmacy degree or equivalent
- Inpatient pharmacy, specifically in an acute hospital setting
Preferred or Nice-to-have Skills:
- Completion of a PGY1 or PGY2 residency Experience in working in a Union environment
- Experience in working with Critical Care/ICU, Med-Surg, Infusion and Emergency Room/Urgent Care Experience with hospital expansion efforts.
Essential Responsibilities:

- Manages designated units or teams by translating business plans into tactical action items; oversees the completion of work assignments and identifies opportunities for improvement; ensures all policies and procedures are followed; partners with key stakeholders and business leaders to ensure products and/or services meet requirements and expectations while aligning with departmental strategies. Aligns team efforts; builds accountability for and measuring progress in achieving results; assumes responsibility for decision making; fosters direct reports to resolve escalated issues as appropriate. Communicates goals and objectives; incorporates resources, costs, and forecasts into team and unit plans; ensures matrixed resources are fulfilling service or performance requirements across reporting lines. Removes obstacles that impact performance; identifies and addresses improvement opportunities; guides performance and develops contingency plans accordingly; influences teams and units to operate in alignment with operational and business objectives.
- Drives solutions for implementation and development drug therapy by: overseeing efforts for proper drug use management across multiple teams and/or locations; evaluating and implementing improvements to high-impact content and training sessions about utilization of medicine to senior leaders; closely collaborating with senior health care providers to gather relevant sources on potential changes within the market and upcoming new drugs and analyzes trends to forecast the impacts of new drugs on the teams drug use management; collaborating across teams and senior leaders to provide input and oversee complex pharmacotherapeutic drug regimen guidelines and trainings; developing advanced strategies to provide teams with best practices to ensure members, patients and/or healthcare providers understand appropriate use, application, and interactions of moderate to prescribed medication and proactively provides drug information to relevant healthcare providers to challenge conventional thinking; assisting in creating standards for application of strategies to ensure achievement of member financial and therapeutic objectives; and evaluating service areas reports of member data to assess overall plan outcomes and crafting recommendations and action plans on how to affect change.
- Oversees drug education and training efforts by: coordinating teams and evaluating complex pharmacy and provider education to positively impact patient compliance and provider prescribing practices.
- Provides pharmaceutical patient care and drug therapy by: overseeing productive relationships with care providers and members; managing teams workflow and execution of comprehensive pharmaceutical information e.g., drug therapy, adverse effects, compliance, appropriate use, and handling); helping to design therapeutic regimens and/or programs applicable across patients in multiple services while integrating patient-specific disease and drug information, current practice standards, ethical issues, and quality-of-life issues, and pharmacoeconomic principles; managing development, implementation, and coordination of regional, hospital, hospital-based, or ambulatory drug initiatives, other formulary management activities, and/or related drug trials; integrating implementations, evaluating, and reporting utilization, as appropriate, of targeted medications and medication classes, strategizing the implementation of initiative and novel work to assure safe, rational and cost-effective prescribing; guiding the process to understand clinicians or department-level decisions, support, and feedback to facilitate engagement and further strategize support for the drug use process; and managing improvements to and coordination of high-impact complex pharmaceutical care and optimal utilization of resources to and from hospital, acute, and ambulatory patient-care settings.
- Leads team to monitor services in compliance with state and federal laws, all regulatory bodies, established quality standards and organizational service standards by: managing adherence to all regulatory rules and regulations (e.g., Drug Enforcement Administration [DEA], State Board of Pharmacy, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act [HIPAA]) and relevant internal regional and national policies; driving multiple teams and self to maintain knowledge with policies and procedures and performing in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and accreditation standards as they relate to the assigned department; managing investigation of, responses to, and resolution of complex escalated member inquiries and concerns from teams with innovation and ingenuity; and managing teams to collaborate with physicians, other medical professionals, and health plan personnel to assess, resolve, and assure a wide range of complex quality and process outcome measures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate of Pharmacy or equivalent degree (e.g., Bachelors of Pharmacy from a School of Pharmacy) AND completion of a Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) residency at time of hire AND minimum three years of experience as a Pharmacist and/or Pharmacist Intern in pharmacy or a directly related field OR Doctorate of Pharmacy or equivalent degree (e.g., Bachelors of Pharmacy from a School of Pharmacy) AND minimum five years of experience as a Pharmacist and/or Pharmacist Intern in pharmacy or a directly related field.
- Minimum two year of experience managing operational or project budgets.
- Minimum three years of experience in a leadership role with direct reports.
