Job Description Starting Date: Aug 27, 2026 Position Summary The Instructional Coach partners closely with educators, administrators, and district teams to improve the quality of teaching and learning across all content areas in the K-8 schools. This role is central to advancing the school’s instructional vision in alignment with classroom practice, school priorities, and district initiatives. Through coaching, collaboration, and instructional leadership, the coach supports the continuous growth of educators and the effective implementation of high‑quality curriculum. As a member of the school’s Instructional Leadership Team, the coach contributes to strategic planning, professional learning, and the development of systems that promote instructional coherence and equity. The Instructional Coach fosters a culture of reflective practice, data‑informed decision‑making, and shared accountability for student outcomes, working to ensure all students have access to rigorous, engaging, and standards‑aligned learning experiences. Design and facilitate ongoing coaching cycles with teachers that include goal‑setting, co‑planning, modeling, observation, and feedback. Build trusting, growth‑oriented relationships with teachers to support reflective practice and continuous improvement. Provide coaching and collaborative planning support to teachers, promoting culturally responsive and equitable instructional practices for students with diverse learning needs, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities. Use student data, classroom observations, and teacher input to tailor coaching support. Differentiate coaching approaches to meet the needs of novice and veteran educators. Work collaboratively with the school principal in the planning and implementation of instructional priorities and initiatives through coaching. Serve as an active member of the school’s ILT and participate in regular leadership meetings to analyze data, identify trends, and determine strategic actions. Support the development and execution of the school’s instructional vision and School Improvement Plan alongside other ILT members. Support teachers and teams in analyzing student work and assessment data to inform instruction. Promote the use of formative assessment practices to guide real‑time instructional adjustments. Collaborate with the K‑8 Curriculum Coordinators to support curriculum alignment and instructional coherence across grades and content areas. Provide feedback to district teams on curriculum implementation, strengths, and areas for refinement as a generalist instructional coach. Support educators in implementing tiered interventions by consulting with the Child Study Team (CST) upon request. Assist teachers in unpacking standards, internalizing curriculum materials, and planning rigorous, standards‑aligned instruction as a generalist instructional coach. Support the rollout of new or revised curricula across multiple content areas and grade levels. Support the organization of curriculum and instructional materials for their building site(s), which may include distribution at a building site(s), to ensure teachers have timely access to resources needed for effective implementation. Design and facilitate professional development sessions aligned with instructional priorities and effective implementation of curriculum as a generalist instructional coach. Model instructional strategies that align with district‑adopted curricula and best practices. Support implementation and provide actionable feedback to teachers and leadership. Build teacher capacity in high‑impact instructional strategies, culturally responsive teaching, and equitable practices. Contribute to a collaborative adult learning culture within the school. Additional duties as assigned by the Principal/Supervisor and in accordance with the SEU Collective Bargaining Agreement. Qualifications & Requirements Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education or related field preferred. Valid DESE educator license in Elementary 1‑6 required. Valid DESE educator license in either ESL PreK‑6 or Moderate Disabilities PreK‑8 required. Minimum of 5 years of successful classroom teaching experience with demonstrated student achievement gains. Experience in instructional coaching, teacher leadership, or curriculum development preferred. Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills Deep understanding of effective instructional practices across content areas. Knowledge of the principles of adult learning and coaching skills. Strong facilitation, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Ability to analyze data and translate insights into actionable instructional strategies. Reporting Relationships Position Reports to: School Principal and K‑8 Curriculum Coordinator Terms of Employment Position Type: Full Time Work Year: 184 days; Up to five (5) additional days paid at the per diem may be required. Work Hours: 8:00am‑2:45pm Location: K‑8 School – specific school to be assigned after hiring FLSA Classification: Exempt Union Status: SEU, Unit A Salary and benefits are determined in accordance with the Somerville Educators Union, Unit A collective bargaining agreement and the policies of the Somerville School Committee.
