Police Officer Trainee

The Oakland Police Department is hiring Police Officer Trainees. The ideal candidate will have a strong personal motivation, an interest in others, and the ability to deal effectively and fairly with residents and co‑workers. Candidates should be able to identify problems and resolve them quickly under pressure and be willing to work in a fast‑paced, urban environment. After successful completion of the academy, Police Officers receive step increases on a yearly basis and may reach the top step after five years. Minimum Qualifications High‑school diploma from an accredited U.S. high school or a GED certificate. Must be 21 years of age upon graduation from the academy. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. No felony convictions or other misdemeanor convictions that would prevent carrying a firearm. Must be a U.S. citizen. Candidates may be screened out at any point based on the position requirements; requirements may be waived for individuals with prior experience or certification. Background Investigation Selected candidates will undergo a background investigation, a polygraph examination, and may be required to attend a Chief’s Character Review and interview. Successful candidates will receive a conditional job offer pending successful completion of medical and psychological examinations. Selective Certification Some positions may require specific bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin. Candidates must demonstrate the required language skills to be selectively certified. Oakland Residency and Veteran’s Preference Candidates claiming Oakland residency preference points must show proof of Oakland residency at the oral exam.
