Departmental Overview The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California, serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty & staff in the vibrant City of Berkeley, at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to the traditional role of a police department, we also carry out a variety of proactive educational, outreach and crime prevention programs. At the Berkeley campus, we employ approximately 44 sworn peace officers, 70 full‑time civilian employees and 75 part‑time students. Position Summary Provide public safety services on campus and those properties owned, controlled, or occupied by the University. Engage in preventive patrols on foot and by vehicle. Respond to calls for service from University personnel and the public. Make constitutional criminal arrests under the 4th amendment and prepare necessary documentation and testify in court. Conduct investigations. Provide for security and safety of property and persons at University public ceremonies and events. Maintain custody and disposal of lost and found property. Candidates with certification of graduation from a POST basic academy are considered lateral entry, and are sworn in as Police Officers on date of hire. Responsibilities Protects university employees, students, and the general public; patrols and safeguards university property; maintains law and order; and performs other related duties as required. Patrols campus buildings and grounds; protects individuals and/or controls crowds during assemblies or disturbances; guards property against fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry. Answers calls and complaints, taking the necessary police action. Takes proper police action at scene of crime (for example, administers first aid, gathers evidence, locates witnesses and makes arrests). Gathers, analyzes, investigates and prepares written reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts and disturbances of the peace. Gathers/analyzes evidence, makes arrests, and appears in court as required. May direct and control parking regulations and issue traffic citations. Training and development; Other duties as assigned. Works with City of Berkeley police force as required. Required Qualifications Thorough knowledge in the following areas: First Aid/CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lots, general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, use of firearms. Able to observe situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately and completely. Carries a firearm. Must be a US citizen or be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Must have no felony convictions. Excellent verbal and written skills and ability to work effectively and collaborate with individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Excellent ability to use computer devices and programs and other modern law enforcement technologies and tools. Thorough understanding of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends applied within the University environment. Meet all other requirements for peace officers as established by law and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Requires enrollment in and/or completion of basic P.O.S.T. certification. High school diploma and/or equivalent experience/training. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
