BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assists in cooking main dishes, meats, and vegetables; baking bread and desserts, and serving food at an assigned school site or location; maintains food serving and preparation areas in a clean and sanitary condition; sells food, snacks, and beverages to students and staff.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in the Child Nutrition Assistant II classification perform lead duties in the absence of the Child Nutrition Manager and are assigned more complex food service duties than a Child Nutrition Assistant I. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Assists in cooking and prepares foods in accordance with menus, recipes, and procedures including required adjustments for dietary restrictionsfor the assigned location, multiple educational food programs, and extracurricular activities.
Provides work direction to food service staff and performs the duties and responsibilities of the Child Nutrition Manager in their absence or as assigned.
Sets up steam tables; sets out trays, utensils, food, and beverages; counts trays and remaining beverages after meals.
Portions out and serves food to students and staff according to established guidelines.
Prepares fruits, vegetables, and other foods for serving or cooking; assists in preparing foods such as salads, salad dressings, soups, French fries, hot and cold sandwiches, sliced meats, and sliced or grated cheese.
Prepares and sells a variety of hot and cold foods and beverages in a cafeteria, on carts, and alternate points of meal distribution.
Operates and sanitizes a variety of standard kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, mixers, slicers, graters, can openers, steam tables, warmers, and ovens.
Washes and prepares eating and serving areas; washes dishes, trays, pots, pans, utensils, and food service equipment; cleans and sanitizes facilities according to established health regulations and standards; ensures spills on the floor and all serving areas are cleaned immediately for safety.
Performs scheduled heavy cleaning of the facility and equipment including but not limited to sweeping and mopping of storage room, fridge, and freezer.
Assists Child Nutrition Managers in training, assigning, and monitoring the performance of assigned Child Nutrition Assistants; trains substitute employees and student helpers, including students with disabilities as assigned; provides input to the Child Nutrition Managers in the evaluation of assigned personnel.
Assists in receiving food deliveries and stores food items according to established procedures; assists with periodic inventory; assists in storing unused food and supplies according to established procedures.
Assists with counting food items served and money received; collects money for purchases as assigned; verifies qualifications for students receiving free and reduced meals; operates cash register or makes proper change from cash box; counts money and returns money, food, and beverages to cafeteria following meal periods.
Operates a computer, phone, and cash register as assigned.
Must attend meetings and training workshops to maintain current knowledge of State and Federal school lunch requirements, nutritional needs and values, and other food service-related topics throughout employment; complete at least 4 to 6 hours of annual continuing education and training per United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and California Department of Education (CDE) standards.
