Role Summary & Allocation Breakdown
We are seeking an experienced and proactive attorney to join our team as In-House Counsel. This position demands strong commercial acumen, assertive negotiation skills, and regulatory expertise. The primary duties are focused across three core areas: 60% Commercial Collections & Debt Recovery, 20% Commercial Litigation, and 20% Cannabis Licensing & Regulatory Compliance.

As we continue to expand our commercial operations, we are seeking a driven, pragmatic, and detail-oriented In-House Legal Counsel to protect our financial assets, support regulatory compliance, and handle corporate legal matters.

Key Responsibilities

1. Commercial Collections & Debt Recovery (60%)

·        Proactively manage and execute the firm’s accounts receivable (A/R) recovery strategy for delinquent business accounts.

·        Draft, review, and issue formal demand letters, default notices, and payment workout agreements.

·        Negotiate workout arrangements, complex settlement terms, and structured payment schedules with defaulting entities.

·        File liens, UCC-1 financing statements, and initiate legal enforcement mechanisms to secure and recover outstanding commercial debts.

·        Work closely with executive leadership and accounting teams to assess credit risk and refine standard commercial contract terms to minimize future default exposure.

2. Commercial Litigation Management (20%)

·        Directly represent the company or collaborate closely with outside counsel in commercial disputes, breach of contract claims, and recovery litigation.

·        Draft and review pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and settlement agreements.

·        Manage pre-litigation disputes efficiently to achieve cost-effective resolutions prior to formal legal action.

·        Oversee external law firm relationships, legal budgets, and case strategies when specialized local representation is required.

3. Cannabis Licensing & Regulatory Compliance (20%)

·        Oversee the preparation, submission, and tracking of state and municipal cannabis license renewal applications.

·        Lead regulatory filings for new license origination, facility expansions, and ownership structure disclosures.

·        Liaise directly with state cannabis regulatory agencies and local zoning / municipal boards.

·        Monitor evolving state and municipal cannabis laws and administrative rules to ensure ongoing operational compliance.

Qualifications & Experience

·        Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

·        Bar Admission: Active law license in good standing.

·        Experience: 3–6+ years of legal practice, with strong background in commercial litigation, creditors' rights, debt collection, or corporate in-house counsel.

·        Regulatory Background: Direct experience navigating state and local regulatory frameworks (prior cannabis regulatory or administrative law experience preferred).

·        Core Competencies: Strong negotiation, conflict resolution, assertive communication, and commercial risk evaluation skills.

·        Autonomy: Proven track record of managing high-volume workloads independently while prioritizing high-value business objectives.
